The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-1) gave a great effort, but came up short in a 3-1 loss to the Navy Midshipmen (1-0) in the opening round of the 2009 Tiny L. Laster Memorial Tri-Match hosted by Hampton University, Friday afternoon.
The Lady Rams gave the Midshipmen all they could handle, but the Mids outgunned the Lady Rams in the loss.
The Lady Rams were outnumbered as 15 Midshipmen suited up against the seven WSSU, but the numbers were much closer on the scoreboard as the Lady Rams fell 19-25, 27-29, 25-21, and 13-25. As a team, the Lady Rams totaled 24 kills in the match with four total blocks.
WSSU senior outside hitter Annika Barnwell led the attack for the Lady Rams with 10 kills and three solo blocks in the match. Sophomore setter Asia Carr set a new career high with 22 assists in the match.
The Lady Rams won't have long to rest as the team will take on the host Hampton Lady Pirates in a 5:00 p.m. match.
