Dixon-Gordon, Edwards Named NSU Assistant Coaches

Norfolk State University interim head women's basketball coach Debra Clark announced Friday the hiring of Lashondra Dixon-Gordon and Kenny Edwards as the program's new assistant coaches.

"I am very pleased to announce the hiring of my two assistant coaches," Clark said. "Lashondra is a proven, successful recruiter and I look forward to her playing a vital role in recruiting quality student-athletes to the women's basketball program. Kenny brings a wealth of experience in the area of player development as well as familiarity of local talent. I am confident that these two coaches will work extremely hard with me to develop and enhance Norfolk State women's basketball program."

Dixon-Gordon, a native of Sparta, Ga., spent five years as an assistant at her alma mater, Hampton University. She will be responsible for recruiting, guard development and game scheduling.

"I'm excited about becoming a part of the NSU family," Dixon-Gordon said. "I feel that with the support of the NSU administration, our coaching staff will have NSU women's basketball program back to its winning ways."

Dixon-Gordon earned a bachelor's degree in accounting in 2003 and played on the Lady Pirate teams that made NCAA Tournament first-round appearances in 2000 and 2003. She was named to the MEAC All-Tournament team in each of her four years at Hampton and earned the Most Outstanding Performer award at the 2003 MEAC Tournament.

Edwards comes to NSU after spending one season as an assistant with the women's basketball program at Virginia Wesleyan College. Prior to VWC, Edwards spent several years coaching on the high school level. He served as the head boys coach at Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School (2007-08), Princess Anne High School (2003-06) and Frank Cox High School (1992-2003).

While at Cox, Edwards was named Beach District Coach of the Year in 1993,1994 and 1998, and led the Falcons to the regular season district titles in 1994, 1997 and 1998. Under Edwards' leadership, Cox won the Beach District tournament title in 1998.

"It is an honor to join the women's basketball staff at Norfolk State," Edwards said. "I am very excited to be working for an outstanding coach like Debra Clark and I look forward to helping the NSU women's basketball program return to the top of the MEAC."

Edwards, a Norfolk, Va. native, earned his bachelor's degree in health and physical education from Longwood in 1987. His responsibilities at NSU will include developing the post players, coordinating team travel and film exchange.
