Hampton Defeats Delaware State, Advances In MEAC Tourney

Hampton defeated Delaware State 7-1 Friday morning at the Ormond Beach Sports complex to advance in the 2009 MEAC Softball Championship.

 

Amanda Black went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in five runs and scoring twice. She belted a three-run home run to center field in the top of the fifth inning to go along with a two-run single to left-center field in the third inning.

 

Travonna Byrd got the Lady Pirates (25-22) on the board in the top of the second inning, driving home Black and Jada Jeffries with a single to right center field.

 

Megan Lambertz got Delaware State on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a run-scoring single.

 

Jeffries went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Lady Pirates. Black went seven innings in picking up her 19th win of the season, giving up just one run on two hits while striking out three and walking two.

 

The Lady Pirates will play again this afternoon at 3:30, when they take on North Carolina A&T. The winner of that game will play at 5:30 p.m. for a spot in Saturday’s championship game.

 

Admission for the 2009 MEAC Softball Championship is $5 for children, students and seniors. Ticket prices for the entire tournament are $12.
