Top Ranked Gators Blank FAMU, 12-0 In NCAA Opener

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? MEAC champion Florida A&M fell to the top-ranked Florida Gators, 12-0 in the opening round of the Gainesville Regional in the 2009 NCAA Softball Championship Friday evening at Pressley Stadium.

The Gators (56-3) put on a power display in the first two innings, scoring 12 runs on 10 hits, which included six extra base hits ? three doubles and three home runs.

Florida scored five runs on five hits in the first inning, highlighted by a lead off solo homer by Aja Paculba and a two-run shot by Megan Bush.

Paculba and Kristina Hilberth led the Gators with two hits each, with Carrie Books picking up four RBI and Paculba driving in three runs.

In the second, the Gators scored seven runs on five hits to put the game on ice, knocking out FAMU starter Amanda Reyes (22-19).

Reyes worked two innings, allowing 12 runs on 10 hits with no strikeouts and four walks. Melissa Oliphant worked the final two innings, striking out one and walking one, allowing no runs and no hits.

Stephanie Brombacher (21-0) struck out seven and walked one in five innings, allowing
FAMU (30-31) just two hits in the game Friday, coming off the bats of Oliphant and Nicole Terryn.

GAINESVILLE REGIONAL UPDATE: In the early game, Texas A&M blanked Lehigh (Pa.) University, 1-0 and will face the Gators at 1:00 p.m.  Saturday.... FAMU will face Lehigh in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. with hopes of facing the Florida-Texas A&M loser at 5:30 p.m. ...The regional championship game will be Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
