ORANGEBURG, SC ? The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (14-23) closed out their weekend series at South Carolina State (6-26) in a big way with an 11-2 win over the Lady Bulldogs, Sunday afternoon. The Lady Rams have heated up over the last two weeks with four straight wins over MEAC opponents, including a three-game sweep over the Lady Bulldogs this season.
The win marked one of the best performances of the season for the Lady Rams who totaled nine hits in five innings of play and took advantage of six South Carolina State fielding errors.
WSSU sophomore infielder Bonika Terry led the way for the Lady Rams with three hits, three runs and two RBI. She was also credited with a sacrifice fly in her final batting attempt. Senior infielder Leslie Hollis was also key in the victory finishing 2-for-2 from the plate with two runs and two RBI.
The Lady Bulldogs took the early 2-1 lead after the first inning, but the Lady Rams regained control of the game and recorded five runs in the second inning and seized the 6-2 lead. The Lady Rams scored one run each in the third and fourth innings and then closed the door with three fifth-inning runs. After holding South Carolina State scoreless throughout the 9-0 rally, the WSSU defense shut the Lady Bulldogs out in the fifth inning and sealed the 11-2 win.
WSSU senior Amber Shore (11-15) took the win with seven strikeouts and just three walks in five innings of action.
