Lady Rattlers Head Coach Veronica Wiggins get 500th career win with Sweep Over Savannah State

 

Head Softball Coach Veronica Wiggins picked up her 500th and 501st career victories as Florida A&M swept Savannah State, 8-0 and 7-4, here Thursday afternoon at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex.

In game one, FAMU (9-23) pounded out 10 hits as Rhianna Green, Melissa Oliphant and Megan Moore, all finished with two hits each..

Amanda Reyes (7-14) picked up the win for the Lady Rattlers as she pitched her first no-hitter in a Florida A&M uniform.  Reyes struck out four in five innings of work.

Krystle Frost (7-6) took the loss for the Lady Tigers giving up 10 hits and striking out three in four inning of work.

Green scored the Lady Rattlers first run of the game on an Ashley Jones single in the bottom of the first, giving FAMU a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Rattlers scored seven runs in the bottom of  fourth for the eight-run mercy run rule to go in effect for the 8-0 final.

In game two, FAMU blistered out 12 hits, while SSU pumped out six hits.

The Lady Rattlers were led again by Oliphant with three hits, followed by Joyce Harold and Alesha Wells, both with two hits each.

SSU (14-22) has six players to finish with one hit each.

Oliphant (2-2) got the win for the Lady Rattlers as she gave up six hits, three earned runs, and striking out three in six innings of work, while Reyes (1) picked up, her  first save of the season, striking out one in one inning of relief.

Rachel West (6-10) took the loss for the Lady Tigers as she gave up seven earned runs, striking out one in six innings of work. 

SSU took the early 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Brittany Wilson singled to left field scoring Crystal Williams, followed by a Jessica Weimerskirk two-run single scoring Wilson and Brittney Lollis.

FAMU cut into SSU’s lead in the bottom of the second as Harold tripled to right field, scoring Nicole Terryn, who led off the inning with a single.  Then Harold would score on an illegal pitch by a Lady Tiger pitcher, making the score 3-2. 

The Lady Rattlers would tie the score 3-3 in the bottom of the third as Oliphant singles up the middle scoring Shayla Clark, who doubled to led off the inning.

Courtney Harold would give the Lady Rattlers a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Green single up the middle.

FAMU picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Oliphant scored on a Harold single, followed by a Wells single scoring Raven Johnson, giving the Lady Rattlers a 6-3 lead.

The Lady Rattlers had one run cross the plate in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-3 as Jasmine Donaldson scored on an Oliphant sacrifice fly to left field.

SSU would score their final run of the game as Shamyra Adams grounded out to second scoring Darnisha Woods, for the 7-4 final.


The Lady Rattlers will return to action on Tuesday, March 24 as they will face cross town rival Florida State at JoAnn Graf field in a 6 p.m. start.
