MEAC Announces Women's Basketball Weekly Honors

North Carolina A&T’s Brittanie Taylor-James was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Teammate Nakia DeBlanc earned the Rookie of the Week honor, while Coppin State’s Whitney Cunningham earned the Defensive Player of the Week accolade.

 

Taylor-James (Forward, 6-0, Sr., Evanston, Illinois) extended the Lady Aggies win streak to three and helped her team clinch the 2008-09 MEAC women’s basketball regular-season title last week. Taylor-James averaged 22 points, 5.5 rebounds and three assists in the victories. She shot 89-percent (17-of-19) from the charity stripe and added two blocks and three steals during the two wins.  

 

DeBlanc (Center, 6-2, Fr., Rankin, Pa.) averaged eight points and five rebounds in 18 minutes of action during two conference match ups for the Lady Aggies.  DeBlanc shot 54-percent from the floor (6-of-11) and added two assists, one blocked shot and one steal.

 

Cunningham (Center, 6-3, Sr., Baltimore, Maryland) averaged eight rebounds, three blocks and one steal to guide the Lady Eagles to a 2-0 mark last week. Against Howard, Cunningham pulled down 11 rebounds, blocked two shots and added two steals. She followed that performance with five rebounds and four blocked shots in a win over Maryland Eastern Shore. Offensively, Cunningham posted 26 points, including 8-of-11 from the charity stripe.

 

Other Top Performers:

Corin Adams (MSU) averaged 20.5 points, six assists and three steals to aid the Lady Bears to a 1-1 mark last week.

 

Zykia Brown (How) recorded her third 30-point performance of the season with 31 points and six rebounds in a loss to Coppin State.

 

Ta’Wuana Cook (NCAT) tallied 24 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals to extend the Lady Aggies’ win streak to three last week.

 

Demetria Frank (BCU) led the Lady Bears with an average of 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists in two games.

 

Bria Jackson (UMES) posted a career-high 15 points and five rebounds in a win over Bethune-Cookman.

 

April McBride (UMES) averaged 21 points and 8.5 rebounds to aid the Lady Hawks to a 1-1 mark.

 

Marie Reid (SCSU) recorded a double-double and matched a season-high of 30 points and 10 rebounds in a one point loss to Bethune-Cookman.

 

Kristina Rosario (MSU) totaled 13 points, 18 rebounds, and two steals in two conference match ups last week.

 

Shontavious Wylie (SCSU) averaged seven points, six rebounds and three assists for the Lady Bulldogs.
