Lady Eagles Soar Past Winston-Salem State Women 73-34

Coppin State jumped out to a 6-0 lead three minutes into the game on Monday evening and never trailed for the remainder of the contest as the defending MEAC champions handed the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State a 73-34 defeat at the Joel Coliseum Annex.

The Lady Eagles built upon their six-point advantage as they outscored WSSU 11-1 over the first 7:35 of the contest as they increased their advantage to a half-high 23 points en route to outscoring the Lady Rams 33-10 during the first 20 minutes of play as WSSU turned in their lowest-scoring single-half output of the season to date.
 
Second half action was witness to the Lady Rams’ awakening from their offensive slumber as WSSU equaled their first-half scoring output only 5:45 into the period as senior guard Keoshia Worthy recorded all four of her points on the evening in the opening moments of the second half as WSSU’s shooting began to heat up.

Leading the way for the Lady Rams, MaLisa Bumpus paced WSSU with 13 points in the loss as she was the only WSSU player to score in double digits.

Spartans Continue Skid, Fall 78-52 to Florida A&M

NORFOLK, Va. - Melissa Daniels scored a game-high 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field as the Florida A&M handed Norfolk State its 20th loss of the season with a 78-52 win on Monday evening at Joseph Echols Hall.

In the second half, it was all FAMU as NSU (0-20, 0-10) could get no closer than 11, 40-29, on a layup by Danelle Tate with 17:27 left in the game.


Melissa Daniels and teammate Deidra Jones almost recorded double-doubles for FAMU. In addition to her 14 points, Daniels grabbed nine rebounds, while Jones had 11 points and nine assists. Tameka McKelton (13), Kirsten Stallings (11), and Jarquella Woods (10) all scored in double figures for the Lady Rattlers.

Danelle Tate was the only Spartan in double figures with 10 points. Raychele Payne added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.

S.C. State Falls 62-59 to Morgan State

 

ORANGEBURG, SC ? Corin Adams tossed in 19 points, including four free throws in the final 28 seconds, to lift visiting Morgan State to a 62-59 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over South Carolina State Monday night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

 

Despite having three players in double figures, led by Sophilia Hipps’ 18 points, the Lady Bulldogs dropped their third straight contest to slip to 5-16 overall and 2-7 in the MEAC.

 

Also in double figures for Coach Doug Robertson’s Lady Bulldogs were Marie Reid and Shontavius Wiley with 14 each. Hipps, Wiley and Reid, all contributed 10 rebounds in the loss for SC State, which enjoyed a 51-47 edge on the glass.

 

Adams, for the Lady Bears, was supported by Erin Hawkins and Brittany Dodson with 12 points each in the victory. Adams and Barber also had eight boards each for Morgan State, which climbed to 14-9 and 6-4 in the MEAC.

North Carolina A&T Tops Bethune-Cookman 90-68

GREENSBORO, N.C. ? North Carolina A&T topped Bethune-Cookman 90-68 in a MEAC game in the Corbett Center.

 

Jalisa Isaac continued to be an offensive presence as she led B-CU in scoring with 19 points, including hitting five three-pointers for the third time this season. Demetria Frank got in on the action in all facets of the game, coming away with 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, and seven steals. Sarah Bolden led B-CU in rebounds, grabbing seven boards, while also scoring in double-figures with 12 points.

 

Amber Bland led the Lady Aggies with 24 points, while Brittanie Taylor-James chipped in 20 points.

Delaware State’s Defense Throttles Howard

 

Washington, DC?Delaware State used its defense to grind out a 45-32 win over Howard in a MEAC game at Burr Gymnasium.

 

Delaware State was effective in shutting down Howard leading scorer Zykia Brown as she missed five of six shots and scored only three points.

 

Brown led Howard with 10 points while freshman guard India Bradford came off the bench to add seven.

 

Wakefield of Delaware State led all scorers with 11 points while Jameka Smith chipped in with eight. Nine different players scored for the Lady Hornets.

Hampton’s Strong Finish Downs Maryland Eastern Shore

 

HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton went on a 9-3 run in the final minutes to pull out their MEAC win over Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) 57-47. The Lady Hawks (10-11) fall to 6-4 in the MEAC.

 

April McBride extended her double-double streak to six tonight. She led the Lady Hawks with team highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Tiffany Reid and Casey Morton both finished in double-digits with 12 and 10 points respectively.

 

UMES was up by as much as eight in the second half when Hampton mounted an attack going on a 14-1 run to push ahead 46-41 with 5:13 left on the clock.

 

Reid put the Lady Hawks to within four after grabbing an offensive rebound and putting in the layup with 3:44 to play in the game. But Hampton (9-12, 6-4 MEAC) would control the remainder of the game to and close out the contest.

 

Jerika Jenkins led the Lady Pirates with a game-high 16 points and Chinyere Ukoh finished with a double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds.
