Rams Fall to Bears, 73-64

GAME STATS

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? Morgan State pulled away in the second half and cruised to a 73-64 victory over Winston-Salem Saturday evening during a nationally-televised contest on ESPNU at the LJVM Coliseum.

The Rams turned in a stellar first half as they held the MEAC leading Bears to 32 points behind a strong defensive effort that forced six Morgan State turnovers.

WSSU mounted an effective shooting performance of their own in the half as Brian Fisher and Jamal Durham combined for 24 points, hitting 7- of- 16 field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers, to lead the Rams with 41.7 percent shooting.

The Bears’ Reggie Holmes, who was an uncharacteristic one-for-nine in the first half of play, responded in the second half and proved to be the offensive spark as he ignited a 7-of-10 team-shooting effort from long range to secure the victory for MSU. 

The Rams were led by Brian Fisher who recorded a season-high 25 points in the loss, including as 8-of-10 free-throws. Jamal Durham chipped in 16.

The loss drops the Rams to 6-15 and ends the win streak at two. The Bears improve to 13-10 with the victory and increases their win streak to three games.

Bulldogs Post 69-61 Victory over Eagles

GAME STATS

ORANGEBURG, SC?Freshman Jimmy Williams tossed in 15 points, while senior forward Jason Johnson recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds including three blocks as the South Carolina State Bulldogs (10-11, 5-4 MEAC) ousted Coppin State (7-16, 5-5 MEAC) Saturday, 69-61, during a nationally televised game on ESPN2 at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Coppin State was led by senior All-MEAC and Preseason Player of the Year Tywain McKee with 15 points.

After a see-saw matchup that placed both teams in a draw for most of the game, a pair of free-throws by Jessie Burton and a dunk by Jason Johnson pushed South Carolina State ahead by 10, 68-58 with  1:06 left in the game and eventually sealed the victory for the Bulldogs.

Junior Jason Flagler and sophomore Westley Telfare tossed in 12 points each, while senior Josh Jackson chipped in 11 and grabbed nine rebounds in the victory. Telfare also connected on four 3-pointers in the game.

Wildcats Edge NSU 64-57 in Battle for 2nd Place

GAME STATS

NORFOLK, Va. ?Bethune-Cookman picked up the 64-57 win over Norfolk State and held the Spartans to just 38 percent shooting Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.

Jarrell Thomas scored a team-high 14 points off the bench for the Wildcats (12-11, 6-3), while John Holmes added 13 and nine rebounds. C.J. Reed scored 12 points and had five assists.

Michael Deloach scored a game-high 18 points for the Spartans (7-13, 5-4), who lost their second straight to fall into a third-place tie in the standings with South Carolina State. Corey Lyons added 13 points and Joseph Dorsett-Jeffreys contributed a season-high 12.

The Spartans maintained a 52-49 edge after two Lyons free throws with 6:49 remaining. But Tobias Mahone, who scored eight points, sparked a 7-0 run with a 3-pointer and a layup on consecutive possessions. The Wildcats never trailed again, holding NSU to just on field goal in the final eight minutes.

The Wildcats shot 46 percent from the floor and had just 12 turnovers, offsetting NSU’s 37-27 edge on the boards. The Spartans were just 4-of-15 (27 percent) from 3-point range and 15-of-26 (58 percent) from the free-throw line.

Monroe had a game-high 14 rebounds to go with seven points for the Spartans. Deloach added five rebounds and three steals.

Bison Picks Up Third Straight Win

GAME STATS

Washington, DC - Eugene Myatt scored a game-high 22 points, but it was Curtis White and C.J. Prince who proved to be the difference in the second half as Howard defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 72-65 at Burr Gymnasium. 

The win was the third straight for the Bison (6-16 overall, 4-5 in the MEAC) while the Hawks (6-16 overall, 2-7 in the MEAC) dropped their fifth in a row.

Howard set the tone early, jumping out to the a 35-26 halftime advantage.  Myatt led the way for the Bison with 16 points while Kyle Riley tallied nine.

Howard’s Adam Walker finished with five rebounds, four off the offensive glass and three blocks, one of which prevented UMES from taking the lead late in the game.

The win puts the Bison in the thick of the MEAC race.

White finished with 11, Riley with 14 and seven rebounds and Price with nine.

The Hawks’ Neal Pitt led with 18 points and 17 rebounds while Mayes and Gary Lee each contributed 12 off the bench.

Aggies Hot Shoot Edges Out Rattlers

GAME STATS

Greensboro, N.C. - The Aggies used their best shooting performance of the season (60.0 percent) to beat Florida A&M 73-63 at Corbett Sports Center Saturday evening. The Aggies (10-13, 4-5) now find themselves one of eight teams in the conference that has either four or five losses in the league.

Coleman led the Aggies with 17 points and nine rebounds on 7-for-8 shooting. It marked just the sixth time this season Coleman has taken eight or more shots in a game.

Alston finished with 15 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

Larry Jackson led the Rattlers with 14.

Defense Leads to Hornets Victory

GAME STATS

HAMPTON, Va.? A strong defensive effort, holding the Pirates to just 25-percent shooting from the field, led to a 49-39 win for Delaware State (6-18, 4-5 MEAC) over Hampton (10-12, 4-5 MEAC) on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Convocation Center in Hampton, Va.

The Hornets shot 27.3 percent from the floor during the first 20 minutes of action. DSU turned things around in the second half, converting 12-of-24 from the field (50.0 percent), including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. For the night, Delaware State shot 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from the 3-point arc. Defensively, the Hornets held Hampton to 25 percent shooting, completely shutting down the Pirates from 3-point land (11.5 percent).

The Hornets forced Hampton to commit 20 turnovers, resulting in eight DSU points. Delaware State had its share of mistakes, committing 19 turnovers.

Senior Donald Johnson led all Hornets with a game-high 16 points and grabbed six rebounds and recorded three assists.

Hampton was led by Donte Harrison who registered the games only double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds).

With the win, Delaware State snapped a two-game conference losing skid and earned the team’s first Saturday victory of the season.
