Lady Wildcats Too Much For Winston-Salem State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman took control of the tempo early and never let up as it topped Winston-Salem State 67-56, to snap a three game losing skid.

 

The first half was an offensive showcase from the beginning, with a combined 42 points scored in the first ten minutes of the game. As the half neared, B-CU came out on top and carried that into the locker room, leading 31-29.

 

After halftime, the Lady Wildcats came firing out of the gates, making a 16-5 run immediately, broken up by the Lady Rams seven minutes into the half.

 

B-CU took their biggest lead of the game at 16 points with just over 1:30 remaining after fending off two WSSU rallies late in the game.

 

Jalisa Isaac led B-CU in scoring, collecting 23 points, just one point off from a career high. Demetria Frank scored 20 points, in addition to grabbing seven rebounds and four steals. Sarah Bolden also finished with double-figures, scoring 10 points and getting five rebounds. Euneshia Proctor played strong on the boards, leading the Lady Wildcats in rebounds with 10.

 

Leading the way for the Lady Rams was sophomore guard MaLisa Bumpus who poured in a game-high 20 points in the loss. She was the only WSSU player to reach double-digit scoring in the loss, but redshirt-senior Keoshia Worthy and sophomore guard Rene Rector added nine points each in the game.

FAMU Crush S.C. State, 82-45

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ?Florida A&M unleashed a 50-point second half blitz to breeze past South Carolina State, 82-45 in a MEAC affair Monday night in Gaither Gymnasium.

 

Florida A&M (9-10, 4-4 in MEAC) snapped a four-game conference losing skid in style Monday, as four Lady Rattlers scored in double figures, led by senior Deidra Jones with 18 points.

 

Senior Stephanie Foster added 17 points, while the duo of freshman Antonia Bennett (11 points, 12 rebounds) and senior Melissa Daniels (10 points, 10 rebounds) both turned in double-doubles in the rout.

 

Sophilia Hipps sparked South Carolina State (4-14, 1-6 in MEAC) with a game-high 19 points. Marie Reid and Shontavious Wylie each added seven points, while Jenell Moore led SCSU in rebounding with six boards.

 

FAMU dominated in all phases, shooting 51.5 percent (35 of 68) from the floor to 29.1 percent for SCSU, while turning in a monstrous performance on the boards, out rebounding the Lady Bulldogs, 56-22.

 

Both teams shot under 50 percent in the opening half, with three ties in the first 13 minutes.

 

With the score tied 9-9, SCSU held a couple of three-point leads, the last at 14-11 on a Wylie layup with 10:35 left in the half.

 

Back-to-back jumpers by FAMU’s Stephanie Foster staked the Lady Rattlers to a 15-14 lead by the 9:01 mark, sparking a 17-12 run that put her team ahead, 32-26 at the half.

 

FAMU shot 58.8 percent (20 of 34) in the second half from the floor, hitting six of nine three-pointers, while the Lady Bulldogs shot 25 percent (7 of 28) from the field in the final stanza, leading to a 50-19 scoring advantage for the Lady Rattlers.


 

Tough Loss Ends Win Streak For Lady Hawks

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Two made free throws with four seconds on the clock pushed the Coppin State (CSU) over Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) 71-69, Monday night in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.  

 

The loss gives the Lady Hawks a 5-3 record in the MEAC and stops their second longest winning streak under Head Coach Fred Batchelor.

 

April McBride continued her dominating play.  The 6-0 junior fouled out of competition, but not before recording her seventh double-double of the season with a team-high 20 points and game-high 10 rebounds.  Freshman Adobi Agbasi finished the game with a career-high 13 points, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor and 83-percent from the free throw line.

 

Other Lady Hawks in double digits were Josephine McLane and Casey Morton.  McLane tied Agbasi with 13 points and Morton finished with 12 adding a game-high six assists to the effort.

 

Whitney Cunningham led the Eagles with a game-high 22 points and team-high seven rebounds. Danielle Anders finished with 19 points and Shante Cummings had 13.

Lady Hornets Top Bears For Fourth Straight Win

Dover--- Freshman Sonia Johnson had 21 points and Keyhana Wakefield added 11 to lead Delaware State to a 60-50 MEAC women’s basketball win over Monday State in Memorial Hall Monday evening.

 

The Lady Hornets won their fourth straight to improve to 11-10 overall and 7-1 in the MEAC. The Bears have dropped two straight to fall to 13-8 and 5-4.

 

DSU also stretched its win streak to six in a row over Morgan State.

 

Johnson, who was named MEAC Rookie-of-the-Week for the second time this season on Monday, has led the Lady Hornets in scoring in each of the last four games.

 

Ashley Thompson had eight points and a game-high nine rebounds for Delaware State.

 

Corin Adams was the only Morgan State player in double-figures, tying Johnson for game-high scoring honors with 21 points.

Brown, Day Pace Howard In Win Over Norfolk State

Washington, DC?February 2---Zykia Brown poured in a career high 32 points and Natalie Day recorded her second double-double of the season as Howard rolled to a an easy 71-45 win over Norfolk State in a MEAC game at Burr Gymnasium.

 

The Lady Bison, who snapped a three-game skid, came out of the blocks early, building a 38-20 halftime lead and never looking back in putting up their highest point total of the season.  Brown and Day led the way by combining for 29 of their team’s points.

 

The Spartans (0-18 overall, 0-8 in the MEAC) shot only 23 percent from the field and gave up 22 points off turnovers.

 

Tiora Hackley came off the bench to lead Norfolk State with 15 while Whitney Long added 11.

Lady Aggies Rally to Beat Hampton

HAMPTON, Va., February 2, 2009 ? The Aggies rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to beat Hampton 75-69 at the HU Convocation Center Monday night.

 

Brittanie Taylor-James led the Aggies with 26 points. Sophomore Jaleesa Sams recorded her fourth career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Her 12 rebounds tied a career high.

 

Monday’s game marked the second time in two weeks the Aggies have rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to win. The Aggies have managed to win nine of the 11 games in which they have trailed at the half this season, including Monday’s game.

 

Hampton Senior Chinyere Ukoh had another impressive night, putting up 15 points and pulling down eight rebounds. It was freshman Bernadette Fortune who led the way for the Lady Pirates with a career-high 18 points. During her 15 minutes of play, sophomore Quanneisha Perry racked up 17 rebounds.
