RENE RECTOR’S GAME-WINNER LIFTS WSSU PAST HOWARD 59-56

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? WSSU fans have seen it before and on Saturday afternoon at the Joel Coliseum Annex they got to see it again.  Rene Rector’s last-second three-pointer lifted the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams past the Lady Bison of Howard as Rector repeated her late-game heroics versus the Bison for the second consecutive season en route to earning WSSU a 59-56 victory on Valentine’s Day.

With the game tied at 56-56 with 23 seconds remaining following a clutch 12 foot jumper from Howard’s Natalie Day, Rector would prove to be the Lady Bison killer for the second straight year as she calmly drilled a step-back three-pointer from the left corner of the court that hit nothing but the bottom of the net with one second remaining in what would prove to be a three-point WSSU victory.

Vontisha Woods’ 18 points and nine rebounds and MaLisa Bumpus’ 13 points and three boards helped WSSU split the season series with the Lady Bison as the two teams are now deadlocked at 2-2 in the all-time series as the home teams have won all four meetings.

Howard was led by Zykia Brown’s 20 points and seven rebounds in a losing effort as the Lady Bison fall to 3-20 on the season with the loss.
