Hot-shooting Eagles Too Much for Hornets
Dover, Del. - The Coppin State Eagles shot an impressive 55-percent from the field and a blistering 56-percent from behind the arc (9-of-16) to upend the Delaware State Hornets Saturday night at Memorial Hall.
With the win the Eagles improve to 6-15 overall and 4-4 in the MEAC, while the Hornets drop to 3-4 in the league and 5-17 overall.
Frisco Sandidge led the Hornets with 16 points and seven rebounds. Also scoring in double-digits were junior Marcus Neal (12 points) and sophomore Trevor Welcher (15 points). Freshman Jared Grady, making his second-career start, led all DSU players with a career-high four assists.
Coppin State was led by Michael Harper, who registered a game-high 21 points. Harper converted 8-of-15 shooting from the floor and drained 5-of-9 shot from beyond the arc.
Mike Buckley poured in 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting (3-3 from the 3-point arc). The Hornets were able to hold Tywain McKee to six points, 12 points down from his current per game average (18).

Rams Stun Rattlers, 80-66
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Hampered by a cold shooting night from the field and at the line, the Florida A&M Rattlers dropped an 80-66 non-conference men's basketball game to the Winston-Salem State Saturday night in Gaither Gymnasium.
The loss was the third straight for the Rattlers (6-13), which dropped their first home game since a December 6 loss to Bethune-Cookman.
Freshman David Buchanon led FAMU with 15 points, followed by fellow first-year teammate Yannick Crowder with a double-double, scoring 13 points, while hauling down 13 rebounds. Senior Lamar Twitty added 11 points for FAMU.
The visiting Rams got a game-high 16 points from Brian Fisher, followed by 15 points from Jamal Durham and 12 points from Isiah Tucker. Corey Morris led WSSU on the boards with eight rebounds.
WSSU (5-14) got off to the races early, shooting a blistering 60.7 percent (17 of 28) from the field, while cashing in 57.1 percent of their 3-point shots (4-of-7) in the opening period, bolting to a 42-29 halftime lead.
The Rams finished the game with a 19-7 run, rebuilding their lead back to 10 points with just over two minutes left, coasting in from there.

Deloach, Spartans Rally Past Hampton, 68-62
HAMPTON, Va. ? Michael Deloach scored a game-high 22 points, 14 in the second half, to help Norfolk State rally for its fifth straight win, 68-62, over rival Hampton in the Battle of the Bay at the HU Convocation Center Saturday night.
NSU (7-11, 5-2) rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit by holding the Pirates (10-10, 5-3) to 23 percent shooting and 24 points in the second half.
Deloach gave NSU its first lead of the night, 57-54, with a deep 3-pointer with 3:56 left. He put an exclamation point on the victory with a fast-break alley-oop slam off a pass from Aleek Pauline in the final minute.
NSU’s Corey Lyons scored 17 points, hitting 14-of-17 from the free-throw line. Kevin Worsley added eight points and four rebounds off the bench. Deloach had four of the Spartans’ nine steals, and Pauline had three.
Vincent Simpson had 17 points and Kwame Morgan 15 for the Pirates, who shot 32 percent, the lowest for an NSU opponent this season.

Kirkpatrick’s Play In Overtime Lifts Howard To Win
Washington, DC ? Paul Kirkpatrick scored the go-ahead basket on a dunk and then added two free throws to help Howard defeat North Carolina A&T, 77-74 in a nip-and-tuck MEAC men’s game at Burr Gymnasium.
The Aggies pushed the ball up the court and attempted a shot that missed and was gathered in by Kirkpatrick. The 6-9 junior center sank both free throws to give the Bison the win and snapped a two-game losing streak.
The Bison were in a position to win the game twice in regulation. They held a 68-65 lead with 54 seconds remaining but they allowed Robert Johnson to nail a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining.
Kyle Riley and Eugene Myatt each scored 16 while Curtis White had a strong floor game with 13 points and four assists. Randy Hampton chipped in with 10 off the bench.
Ed Jones led all scorers with 19 for the Aggies while Robert Johnson chipped in with 14.

Bears Roll Past Hawks
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. ? Morgan State’s Reggie Holmes had a game-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting to lead the Bears over the Maryland Eastern Shore, 87-52, at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Saturday.
Morgan State (11-10, 6-2 MEAC) controlled the game throughout, never trailed and dropped UMES to 6-13 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
Rodney Stokes (16) and Marquise Kately (14) were the other Bears in double figures as MSU was red-hot from the start. The visitors shot 61.4 percent on 35-of-57 from the floor for the game.
Neal Pitt led the Hawks with 10 points, while Tyler Hines and Marc Davis pulled down four rebounds apiece.
The Bears held UMES to just 10 points for the remainder of half, leading 54-20, heading into the locker room. The 54 points were the most surrendered by the Hawks in a single half this season.
UMES shot just 31.8 percent in the first half compared to 69 percent for MSU A Hines free throw with 3:32 left in the game made it a 79-48 game with 3:32 left, the closest the hosts got in the second half. UMES was only outscored by one, 33-32, in the final 20 minutes, though.
Morgan converted 22 UMES turnovers into 35 points. The Bears had an advantage in points in the paint, 30-16, and on the glass, 35-28. Each team’s bench scored 21 points.

Johnson Paced Bulldogs to Win over Wildcats
Daytona Beach, Fla. - Bulldog senior forward/center Jason Johnson tossed in 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the South Carolina State Bulldogs knocked off Bethune-Cookman Saturday at Moore Gymnasium.
With the victory SC State improves to 8-11 overall, 3-4 in the MEAC, while Bethune-Cookman falls to 11-10 overall, 5-3 in the league.
The Bulldogs committed 13 turnovers in the first-half, while the Wildcats recorded on three.
Freshman Jimmy Wiliams drained a 3-pointer and Jason Johnson provided a much need tip-in to give South Carolina State its first lead of the night, 52-51 with 1:07 left in the game.
Senior Jessie Burton hit a pair of free-throws with 0:22 seconds left to seal the 59-51 victory for South Carolina State over MEAC foe Bethune-Cookman.
Junior Jason Flagler and sophomore Carrio Bennett tossed in 10 points, while senior Josh Jackson chipped in nine in the victory. Flagler also grabbed seven rebounds.
Freshman guard C.J Reed had 12 points in the loss for Bethune-Cookman.
