Fayetteville, Ark. (Dec. 7, 2009) --- Marshawn Powell led all players with 21 points and nine rebounds, and teammate Rotnei Clarke added 14 points to lead the Arkansas Razorbacks to a 71-53 win over Delaware State in a men's basketball contest at Bud Walton Arena Monday evening. The contest was the second of five consecutive road games for the Hornets.
The Razorbacks won their second straight to improve to 4-5 on the season, while the DSU lost its second in a row to fall to 4-3.
Delaware State trailed 40-33 after a three-pointer by Jay Threatt with 12:51 left to play, but Arkansas scored 14 of the game's 16 points over the next six minutes to pull away for good.
"Overall, I was pleased with our effort tonight," said Delaware State head coach Greg Jackson. "We had trouble contending with their size and speed, and blew some opportunities to draw closer with missed shots. Still, our hustle allowed us to be competitive for much of the game."
Marcus Neal was high scorer for Delaware State with 18 points. He was seven-for-14 from the field, including two-of-five from three-point territory. Neal also led the Hornets with seven rebounds. Threatt had a season-high 13 points on five-of-nine shooting from the field, including two three-pointers on five attempts. He also had a team-high three assists.
The Razorbacks led 15-6 in the early going, but the Hornets pulled to within 18-15 after a jumper by Greg Smith with 6:05 left in the half. Arkansas outscored DSU 16-8 during the remainder of the half to hold a 34-23 lead the break.
The Hornets hit just seven of 24 first half shots, but outrebounded the Razorbacks 16-14 in the opening frame.
Delaware State pulled to within 34-26 when Neal hit a three-pointer for the first basket of the second half, and only trailed 36-30 when he hit a lay up with 14:38 left to play.
Powell scored six points and Marcus Brit four during Arkansas' 14-2 second half run.
The Razorbacks opened up their biggest lead, 60-38, on a dunk by Mike Washington with 4:23 remaining in the game.
Delaware State will play the third game of the road swing this Saturday (Dec. 12) at Arizona State. The Hornets will also visit Ohio State (Dec. 19) and UCLA (Dec. 27) before its next home game.
