UMES snaps 10-game losing streak against Delaware State

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Despite a 29.2 first half field goal percentage and being down seven points going into the locker room at half time, the Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team defeated Delaware State, 53-50, in the MEAC season opener at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.

Aggies Edge NSU Men 93-84 in OT

NORFOLK, Va. - Dwane Joshua and Tavarus Alston scored 23 points apiece to help North Carolina A&T squeak out a 93-84 overtime win over Norfolk State on Saturday evening at Echols Hall in the MEAC opener for both teams.

Kyle O'Quinn had 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Spartans (1-7, 0-1 MEAC), who lost their sixth in a row.

NSU led by 10 points at the midway mark of the second half. But the Aggies (4-5, 1-0) clawed back behind some timely buckets from Alston and Joshua and some sub-par free-throw shooting from the Spartans to force OT. Once in the extra stanza, A&T shot 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from the floor while holding the Spartans to 20 percent (2-of-10) shooting.

It was a battle of long-range shooting in the first half, with NSU getting the upper hand early. The Spartans, who hadn't made more than seven 3-pointers in a game this season, canned seven treys in the first half alone. Rob Hampton hit three of those en route to 16 first-half points, and Michael Deloach dished out seven of his career-high 10 assists to help NSU claim a 41-37 lead going into the break. A&T managed six 3-pointers, but shot just 35.5 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes.

The third triple of the night by James Williams and a long two-pointer by O'Quinn gave the Spartans their largest lead of the night at 65-55 with 9:55 left. But the Aggies crept back into it and finally forged a tie at 73-all on a jumper by Alston with 2:53 left. Tim Zephyr hit two foul shots at the other end to give NSU a 75-73 lead, but Alston again tied it with a jumper with 2:15 remaining.

Howard Defeats Hampton in Big Apple Classic

NEW YORK - A dunk from Paul Kirkpatrick with five seconds to play helped Howard push past Hampton with a 56-54 victory Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in the 2009 Big Apple Classic.

Howard picked up its first win of the season, going to 1-8 with a 1-0 mark in MEAC play.

The Pirates held a 54-51 lead with 36 seconds to play after Adam Walker hit a jumper for the Bison, but Vincent Simpson tied the game with 16 seconds left with a 3-pointer. Kirkpatrick's dunk came 11 seconds later, and Simpson let a 3-pointer fly with two seconds remaining, but the shot fell short.

There were four ties in the second half alone, with Hampton and Howard switching the lead back and forth a combined seven times in the period. The Bison never led by more than six in the second half, when Kirkpatrick gave Howard a 52-46 lead with 2:06 to play on a jumper.

Hampton (2-7, 0-1 MEAC) led by no more than three in the second half, going up 30-27 with 14:42 remaining on a Simpson jumper. Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) led the Pirates with 14 points on 4-for-10 shooting and a 4-for-4 effort from the free throw line, while Simpson had 10 points.

Flagler Lead Bulldogs over Rams 63-60

WINSTON-SALEM, NC-Senior guard/forward Jason Flagler recorded his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 14  rebounds, while junior Darnell Porter chipped in 13 and freshman center Jodd Williams added 12 as SC State defeated Winston-Salem State 63-60 Saturday at  the C.E. Gaines Center.

The Rams found themselves in an early struggle after falling into a 21-11 deficit midway through the first half. The Rams would make a push in the final minutes of the half, cutting the deficit down to one point, 25-24 at the 2:14 mark. It was a 10-2 WSSU run that nearly erased the deficit, but the effort wouldn't stand as the team allowed four unanswered points to take a 29-24 deficit into the locker room at the half.
