Lady Pirates Beat Bryant, Finish Third In FIU Tourney
MIAMI, Fla. - Hampton beat Bryant 68-48 in the consolation game of the Florida International Sun & Fun Classic at the U.S. Century Bank Arena on Tuesday to finish third in the tournament.
Hampton opened the second half on an 11-0 run, going up 42-26 with 15:35 to play after Quanneisha Perry sank a layup. Danielle Douglas gave Bryant its first field goal of the second half at the 15:21 mark, when she sank a jumper. Perry hit a jumper with 13:56 to play to extend the Lady Pirates' run to 17-2 and their lead to 48-28.
Hampton led by as many as 28, going up 68-40 with 1:42 to play on a free throw from Ryen Henry.
Senior Whitney Hill led three Lady Pirates in double figures with 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting, also going 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Jericka Jenkins hit five 3-pointers en route to 17 points, while Perry added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Breanna Jones led Hampton with 11 rebounds.

Lady Hawks Sprint Past Devilettes In Second Half, 61-49
ATLANTA, Ga. - Trailing by one point midway through the second half, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks ended the game on a 24-11 run to cruise by the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes, 61-49, in the 16th annual Georgia State Invitational.
Senior April McBride paced the Lady Hawks with 25 points, eclipsing the 1,300 points marker for her career at UMES (1,319). The Lady Hawks (2-4) will play Georgia State, which beat UT-Martin, 61-32, in the first game of the day, for the championship on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
The Devilettes took a 38-36 lead at the 12:11 mark in the second half on a 3-pointer by Ashley Brown. UMES then responded with an 8-0 run to build a 44-38 advantage that they would never relinquish. McBride scored six of the eight points during the stretch.
"April showed a lot of toughness out there tonight," said UMES head coach Fred Batchelor. "The first half was a little sluggish but we persevered and made some big plays in the second half."
Junior Casey Morton was the only other player in double figures for the Lady Hawks. She finished with 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting. Ka'Neisha Smith was the lone Mississippi Valley State player to reach double figures with 11 points.

Doyle's Career High Not Enough in Loss to Monmouth
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Freshman Saadia Doyle poured in a career and game-high 23 points but it was not enough as Howard fell to Monmouth, 61-50 in the opening round of the Hawk Holiday Classic presented by Staybridge Suites and Hotels.
Doyle added eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals while converting 9-of-9 shots from the charity stripe.
HU, who fell to 3-7 with the loss, was held scoreless from 3-point range (0-7) for the first time this season.
The host Hawks improved to 4-6 with the win and were paced by Alexis Canady's 16 points. Alysha Womack added 15 points.
The short-handed Bison played without the services of Tamoria Holmes, India Bradford and Julee' O'Neal. Holmes re-aggravated a knee injury prior to tip-off and is expected to return in the consolation matchup tomorrow (Wednesday, Dec. 30). Bradford suffered a season-ending knee injury against Central Michigan while O'Neal is out with strep throat and listed as day-to-day.
Zykia Brown had 12 points and DonnaLee Scharschmidt contributed five points.

Lady Bears Fall to Peahens, 55-51
Natasha Morris scored a game- and career-high 22 points and Charlene Riddick came off the bench to add 12 points, as host Saint Peter's held off Morgan State, 55-51 on Tuesday evening in the second game of the Saint Peter's Holiday Classic at Yanitelli Center.
With the win, the host Peahens will face Tennessee-Chattanooga in Wednesday's title game at 7:30 p.m., while Morgan State will take on Richmond in the consolation game at 5 p.m. Richmond dropped a 78-69 decision to UT-Chattanooga earlier in the day.
The Lady Bears (3-7) were led by Corin Adams' team-high 16 points and Theresa Davis added 15 for Morgan State which has dropped its last four games. Davis led the team with a game-high four steals, while Adams and Mahala Thomas each added three. Adams also added a game-tying three blocks.
The Peahens (4-6) who carried a 24-23 lead at the intermission, took their largest lead of the game 45-38, following a layup by Quiana Porter with 7:35 to play in the game. Morgan State scored the game's next six points in the midst of an 11-3 run to reclaim the lead at 49-48 after Adams knocked down two free throws with 1:45 left in the contest.

Iowa State Outlasts North Carolina A&T, 66-62
North Carolina A&T team nearly pulled off an upset Tuesday night even after not playing for the past two weeks. A late scoring drought helped Iowa State hold off the Aggies 66-62 at Hilton Coliseum. It was the first game of the Cyclone Challenge.
Freshman Amber Calvin led the Aggies with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds. Tweet Cook added 14 points and now has hit 11 out her last 17 3-pointers.
"I just want to start by saying I'm proud of them,'' said N.C. A&T head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs. "They played hard from beginning to end. I saw some young ladies grow up tonight."
The Aggies trailed by just one at the half, and although they never allowed the Cyclones to grow their lead any larger than five, the Aggies were able to take the lead just once in the second half. That came on a Nikia Gorham jumper in the lane that gave the Aggies a 53-52 lead with 7:03 remaining in the game.
The Cyclones responded with a 3-point play by Alison Lacey. Kelsey Bolte added a jump shot to complete Iowa State's 5-0 run that gave the Cyclones a 57-53 lead with 5:56 remaining.

Bethune-Cookman Falls To Florida Gulf Coast, 80-48
Florida Gulf Coast built a strong lead heading into halftime, and took advantage of turnovers to glide to a 8-48 win over Bethune-Cookman Tuesday evening.
The Lady Eagles earned the first bucket in the game and never surrendered the lead in while opening the game with a 9-2 scoring run.
Bethune-Cookman never got on track offensively, shooting 27 percent from the field overall in the game.
FGCU built on their opening run and continued to distance themselves through the first period, going into the locker room with a 14-point halftime lead.
Coming out in the second half, FGCU built on their momentum and began to run away with the game, pushing the lead to 20 with fourteen minutes remaining. The Lady Wildcats showed a strong performance on the boards, outrebounding the Lady Eagles, However, B-CU could not overcome turning over the ball 22 times, which FGCU capitalized upon, scoring 27 points off turnovers.
