Stomes helps Eastern Kentucky knock off the Bears, 76-62

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Justin Stommes scored 20 points to lead Eastern Kentucky to a 76-62 victory over Morgan State on Tuesday.
The Colonels (8-4), who had lost two straight games, shot 51.1 percent from the field (23-for-45) and used a 10-1 run to break away early in the second half in the first round of the Dr Pepper Classic.
Eastern Kentucky led 36-31 before Joshua Jones and Josh Taylor hit 3-pointers to help the Colonels take a 44-31 advantage with 17:30 remaining in the game.
Morgan State's Kevin Thompson hit a free throw before Jones capped the run with a layup and a 46-32 lead with 16:25 left. The Colonels' lead stayed in double figures the rest of the way.
Jones finished with 16 points and Taylor added 15 for Eastern Kentucky.
Reggie Holmes scored 25 points to lead Morgan State (7-5), the 11th time in 12 games he's scored at least 20 points. Thompson added 14 points.

Purple Eagles Extend NSU's Losing Skid to 9 with 80-69 Win
EL PASO, Texas - Bilal Benn scored 17 points off the bench to lead five Niagara players in double figures, and the Purple Eagles held on to hand Norfolk State its ninth straight loss, 80-69, in the consolation game of the Sun Bowl Invitational on Tuesday night at the Don Haskins Center.
Michael Deloach had a game-high 26 points for the Spartans (1-10).
There were four ties and seven lead-changes in the first half. NSU used a 10-1 run midway through the period, which included a pair of dunks and two free throws by Christian Morris, to take a 19-15 lead. Deloach capped the spurt with a jumper with 9:55 left in the half.
The Spartans maintained a 29-25 advantage after two Rob Hampton free throws with 3:45 left in the half. But Benn hit a pair of 3-pointers in a 10-2 run to end the half that gave Niagara a 35-31 lead.

SC State Falls Short To Clemson 70-67
CLEMSON, SC-JUCO transfer Darnell Porter tossed in 19 along with grabbing five rebounds, while senior guard/forward Jason Flagler chipped in 16 as South Carolina State fell short of a upset over No.18 Clemson 70-67 at Littlejohn Coliseum Tuesday.
Howard Drops Opener to Stephen F. Austin in Opener of Shamrock Classic
MORAGA, Calif. - Eddie Williams scored 11 of his game-high 18 points in the first half and Jereal Scott tallied all of his 14 in the second half to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 73-50 win over Howard in the Shamrock Classic at McKeon Pavilion.
The Lumberjacks (8-2) took control early and capitalized on the Bison's inability to score consistently. Williams led a 10-2 run over the last five minutes to help Stephen F. Austin take a 32-20 lead to the locker room. He made all five of his attempts in the first 20 minutes.
Howard (1-11) got 11 points from Calvin Thompson and six points from Mike Phillips but little else.

#20 Yellow Jackets Too Much For Winston-Salem State As Rams Fall 78-43
ATLANTA, Ga. - A tenacious Winston-Salem State men's basketball team stayed within striking distance of the 20th-ranked Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech for the first 20 minutes of play before a devastating 17-0 run to open the second half of play doomed the Rams as they dropped a 78-43 decision at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
Despite shooting 29.6 percent from the field in the first half, WSSU used a lockdown defensive effort to force 13 Georgia Tech turnovers en route to holding the high-scoring Yellow Jackets to only 33 points in the period.
Using his ninth different starting lineup combination, WSSU head coach Bobby Collins went to his bench early and often as 12 players recorded playing time and seven players scored at least two points. Freshman guard Marcus Wells led the Rams in the first half with five points.
