Coppin State's Women's Basketball Opens PEC With Victory over UMBC
BALTIMORE -- Senior Lakeytah Irving scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and the Coppin State women's basketball team defeated UMBC 55-54 in the Eagles first game in the Physical Education Complex on Saturday.
Senior Shante Cummings put the Eagles ahead for good with a layup with 3:06 remaining giving CSU a 53-52 lead.
Crystal Whittington added a pair of free throws with 2:41 remaining to increase the lead to 55-52.
Katie Brooks scored inside for UMBC to trim the lead to 55-54, but the Retrievers failed on four opportunities to regain the lead including a desperation heave at the buzzer.
Coppin State, which snapped a five-game losing streak with the win, improved to 3-5 overall. UMBC dropped to 4-4 on the year.

Lady Pirates Lose To East Carolina
HAMPTON, Va. - Despite a surge in the closing seconds, Hampton couldn't get over the hump, falling 65-61 to the Pirates of East Carolina Saturday night at the HU Convocation Center.
East Carolina led 64-54 with 1:04 remaining after Ashley Clarke sank a pair of free throws, and Hampton closed on a 7-1 run. Whitney Hill got the run started with a layup with 57 seconds to play, before Jericka Jenkins nailed a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left and Breanna Jones followed with a layup with 24 seconds left.
But Hampton (2-6) never got the ball back, and lost its sixth straight game.
Hampton shot 29.8 percent (22-for-74) from the floor, while also going 5-for-15 from 3-point range. Choicetta McMillian led the Lady Pirates with 16 points on 6-for-14 shooting and a 3-for-7 effort from behind the arc, while Hill came off the bench to score 14 points. Jones had 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Quanneisha Perry added 12 boards.
ECU shot 43.5 percent (20-for-46) from the floor, with Kim Gay, Allison Spivey and Ashley Clarke each scoring 12 points. Crystal Wilson came off the bench to give ECU 11 points. Clarke also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Hampton out-rebounded ECU 45-40 and forced the visiting Pirates into 22 turnovers.

Lady Hornets Drop Fifth Straight
South Orange, N.J. --- The Delaware State women's basketball team has lost five games in a row after a 74-50 setback to Seton Hall at Walsh Gym today.
The Lady Hornets are now 1-6 on the season, while the Pirates improved to 6-4.
Ebonie Williams led Seton Hall with 12 points, while Kandice Green added 11 points and six rebounds for the Pirates. Selena Galloway, who grew up near Seton Hall in Jersey City, paced DSU with 14 points.

Howard Rallies, Falls Short to George Mason
FAIRFAX, VA. - Zykia Brown scored 20 of her game-high 23 points in the second half and Howard overcame a 17-point first half deficit by outscoring George Mason 40-32 after intermission, but the Patriots defeated the Bison 62-55 Saturday afternoon at the Patriot Center.
George Mason (6-3) led 30-15 at the break, but Howard shot 51.7 percent from the floor (15-29) and forced the Patriots into 11 turnovers in the second half.
The Bison held a 24-13 advantage in points off turnovers and led 24-20 in points in the paint, but Howard could not overcome a poor-shooting first half in which led to five field goals in 26 attempts.
The tune changed in the second half as Howard jumped out to an 8-0 run and cut the deficit down to seven with 17:32 remaining. The Patriots pushed the lead back to double digits over the next few minutes and Ashleigh Braxton's basket gave the Patriots a 17-point lead at 11:32.
Howard again chipped away at the lead, however, and four consecutive points by Saadia Doyle cut the Mason advantage to single digits with 4:12 remaining. The Bison pulled within six points at 58-52 with just under a minute left, but the Patriots knocked down four shots from the charity stripe to seal the win.
