Bears push #22 Louisville, But Fall 90-81

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Morgan State played throughout most of the game with their leading scorer sitting on the bench in foul trouble.

Senior guard Reggie Holmes, who entered the game fresh off a career-high 30-point performance against East Tennessee State on Thursday night, scored 9 points (4-12 FG) before fouling out against nationally ranked Louisville (No. 22 ESPN/USA Today, No. 20 AP).

Despite missing their leading scorer on the floor, the Bears fought hard before eventually falling to the Cardinals 90-81 at Freedom Hall on Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped MSU's 3-game winning streak, and its best start in 31 years.

Freshman swingman DeWayne Jackson led Morgan State (2-1) with a season-high 21 points, and sophomore Kevin Thompson notched his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 rebounds for the defending MEAC champions, who kept things interesting late into the second half.

UMES Falls to the Citadel, 88-62, in 3-Point Shootout

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Seventeen points by senior Neal Pitt were not enough for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore to get by The Citadel as they lost 88-62 Sunday in their final game of the Hispanic College Fund Challenge hosted by Missouri State at JQH Arena.

In a breakout game for Pitt, he nearly doubled his point total of the season, which was 19 points entering the contest against the Bulldogs. He also grabbed five rebounds in the loss.

Freshman James Cotton and junior Kevin White each had 10 points for the Hawks. Cotton also had three rebounds and one blocked shot while White contributed three assists, one rebound and one steal. Junior Freddy Obame Obame brought down a game-high 10 rebounds and added in four points of his own.

The game started off with two quick 3-pointers by redshirt sophomores Mark Robertson at 19:45 and Hillary Haley at 19:09 for the Hawks to go up 6-2. The Citadel's Austin Dahn, Zach Urbanus and Joe Wolfinger quickly responded with their own 3's to take the lead 11-8 at 17:10. The Bulldogs would never look back in the game.

Despite foul trouble in previous games, UMES committed their first foul at the 14:50 mark by freshmen Sean Berry and had only five in the first half. No Hawks fouled out of the game.

UMES went into halftime down 42-30 and scored their last point at 2:34 with a basket by White to make things 38-30.
