BETHUNE-COOKMAN ADVANCES WITH WIN OVER MORGAN STATE
BALTIMORE-Bethune-Cookman defeated Morgan State, 3-1 (30-28, 18-25, 25-20, 25-17) Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship tournament at the Coppin Center on the campus of Coppin State University.
The two teams battled back and forth in a hard fought first set. Tied at 28-all, the Lady Wildcats went up 29-28 on a kill by Julie Gibson and won the set with a kill by Linda Nwabuko.
Morgan State tied the match at 1-1 with a victory in the second set. Bethune-Cookman went up 2-1 in the match with a win in the third set. The Lady Wildcats won the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth set.
Three Lady Wildcats posted double-digit kill performances. Senior Chelle Ticeson and junior Kaiyana Johnson recorded 15 kills each, while Jessica Wilson added 13. Jacqueline Woodyear posted 15 digs in the defensive effort.
Senior Ivanti Bush led the Lady Bears (9-22) with a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Erin Cox added 14 kills and 10 digs.
UMES TOPS NORFOLK STATE TO ADVANCE IN MEAC TOURNAMENT
BALTIMORE- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) Whitney Johnson led the Lady Hawks to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-18) sweep of the Norfolk State Spartans in the second match of the day during the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship tournament at the Coppin Center on the campus of Coppin State University.
Johnson, an All-MEAC first-team honoree, hit 73-percent from the floor in the Lady Hawks 23rd victory of the season. She led all players with 11 kills on 15 attempts.
The Lady Hawks (UMES) dominated the first and second sets 25-14 and 25-11. The Spartans regrouped in the third set as the teams went back and forth during the first 12 points. UMES pulled away and ended the match with a 25-18 victory.
Norfolk State struggled offensively and as a team were held to a -.080 hitting percentage. Three Spartans tallied four kills each and setter Nicole Kessner tallied a team-high seven digs defensively for NSU.
The win marked the second straight year that UMES has eliminated Norfolk State from the championship tournament.
The Lady Hawks, the top seed in the northern division, will face Bethune-Cookman in tomorrow's semifinal beginning at noon.
FLORIDA A&M ADVANCES TO SEMINFINALS WITH WIN OVER HOWARD
BALTIMORE, November 20, 2009- The defending MEAC champion Florida A&M Lady Rattlers defeated the Howard Bison 3-0 in the third match of the day during the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship tournament at the Coppin Center on the campus of Coppin State University.
Florida A&M (15-8) took the first set with a commanding score of 25-14 and followed with a 25-9 victory in the second set. The Lady Bison (8-27) continued their offensive struggles and fell 25-14 in the third and deciding set.
Senior Maria Gomez and Jovana Blazeski, the 2009 MEAC Player of the Year, led FAMU with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Gazelle d'Artois posted seven kills and nine digs for Howard.
The Lady Rattlers await the winner of the Delaware State-South Carolina State match which is schedule for 7 p.m. in the Coppin Center.
DELAWARE STATE DEFEATS S.C. STATE, 3-1; ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS
Delaware State defeated South Carolina State, 3-1 in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship tournament at the Coppin Center on the campus of Coppin State University.
Tied at one set a piece, the two teams battled back and forth throughout the third set. DSU was victorious winning with a 25-23 score. Set four was a highly competitive one with South Carolina State (13-20) and Delaware State (20-12) trading point for point. After a tie at 19-all, the Lady Hornets pulled away and won the match 25-20.
Delaware State senior Cassandra Joyner, an All-MEAC first-team honoree, led the way for the Lady Hornets with 21 kills on 46 attacks.
Erica Tajchman and Elisa Hermann added 14 and 11 kills, respectively.
Jarne Gleaton aided the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs (13-20) with 17 kills and seven digs.
Brittany Davis posted 12 kills and led her team with a 35-percent from the floor in the loss.
The Delaware State Lady Hornets will meet the defending national champion Florida A&M Lady Rattlers in a semifinal at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow.
