Florida A&M ended their 2009 home season unbeaten in the Alfred Lawson Center as they defeated Norfolk State, 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-15), Sunday afternoon.
FAMU (14-8, 8-0 MEAC) was led by Jovana Blazeski with 18 kills. Maria Gomez in her final home game as a Lady Rattler finished with 11 kills. Susan Egoavil tallied a game high 16 digs, while Jessica Bond garnered a game high 37 assists.
In a nip and tuck battle in the first set, FAMU was able to tie the score at 24-24 on a NSU's Tracy Copley attach error.
A Bond service error would tie the score at 26-26, but kills by Pamela Barerra and Maria Gomez would give FAMU a 28-26 win.
In the second set, the Lady Rattlers were able to pull away from the Spartans as they went on a 9-2 run to win the set 25-18.
A kill by NSU's Angie Clewis would tie the third set at 11-11, but FAMU would then go on a 14-2 run to win the final stanza, 25-15.
NSU (8-21, 3-5 MEAC) was paced by Charlotte Armstead with eight kills, followed by Elayne Greer and Angie Clewis with six each. Solange Honore finished with a team high nine digs, while Nicole Kessner dished out 27 assists.
Up next for the Lady Rattlers is the 2009 MEAC Volleyball Tournament in Baltimore, Md., on the campus of Coppin State University. FAMU, who went unbeaten the MEAC Southern Division with a perfect record of 8-0, will wait for pairings to be announced on Monday, November 16.
