Hornets Open Season With Rout Of Lions
DOVER, Del.-Delaware State lifted the lid on the 2009-10 campaign with an 84-28 victory over Lincoln University on Friday night at Memorial Hall in Dover.
Brittany Washington had career highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Hornets. Selena Galloway also shared game-high honors with 17 points. Cortney Crockett matched her career high with 15 points, while grabbing a personal-best 11 rebounds. Alexis Abraham (14) and Stephanie (10) also reached double-figures for DSU. Abraham's total included two-of-three shooting from three-point range.
Lincoln was able to keep the game within reach early, down only 14-8 with 11 minutes left in the first half. But a 28-10 run by DSU to close the opening stanza would be enough to end all doubt. Cortney Crockett and Brittany Washington would lead the way for the Lady Hornets, picking up 11 and 10 points respectively for the first half. The Hornets would out-rebound the Lions 25-13, as well as force 16 turnovers while conceding only 11.

Lady Rattler Cagers Rally Past USF, 73-68 In OT
TAMPA, Fla. (Nov. 13) - LaShonda Gaines connected on four free throws down the stretch to give Florida A&M a 73-68 overtime win over South Florida, in their season opener Friday night at the Sun Dome.
FAMU (1-0) had a quartet of Lady Rattlers to finish in double figures with Antonia Bennett leading the way with a game high 19 points to lead all scorers. Tameka McKelton finished with 15, while Gaines dropped in 14, followed by Qiana Donald, who turned in a double-double in 11 points and 11 rebounds. Deidra Jones led the team in assists with five.
USF started the game with a 9-0 run, capped off by a Janae Stokes three pointer with 16:33 remaining in the first, but the Lady Rattlers would answer with a run of their own, as they took a 15-11 lead on a Donald layup at the 12:34 mark of the first capping a 15-2 run.

Spartan Women Fall 66-49 to George Mason in Season Opener
FAIRFAX, Va.-Ashleigh Braxton had a game-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, to lead the George Mason women's basketball team to a 66-49 win Norfolk State on Friday evening at the Patriot Center. Braxton added five rebounds and four assists in 28 minutes of play.
Braxton got things started for GMU (1-0) by knocking down a 3-pointer eight seconds into the game to give the Patriots a quick 3-0 lead. Junior Danelle Tate answered with a layup on the other end with 19:29 left in the first half to get NSU (0-1) on the board.
The Spartans jumped out to their largest lead of the game, 11-7, on a 3-pointer by sophomore Marquilla Evans with 12:44 left in the opening period. A jumper by Janaa Pickard tied the game at 11-all with 10:50 left and the teams traded baskets and saw four more ties over the next five and a half minutes.
A pair of free throws by sophomore Tyishha Bridges with 2:39 left got NSU within one, 23-22, but the Patriots took a 29-25 lead into halftime.

Tough Defense Too Much for Lady Rams in 71-26 Loss at Liberty
LYNCHBURG, VA - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-1) struggled against a tough defensive Liberty Flames (1-0) squad in both teams' season-opener, Friday evening. The Lady Rams were able to hold Liberty in check for much of the game, but faded late as the physical, tough Flames pulled away to hand WSSU the 71-26 loss.
The Lady Rams were plagued by a number of factors in the game, including committing 32 total turnovers in the loss and shooting 26.2% from the field in the game. WSSU junior Rene Rector led the WSSU scoring effort with six points in the game, despite fouling out. Fellow junior Vontisha Woods led the WSSU rebounding effort with five rebounds.
The Lady Rams had a tough start to the game, not scoring in the first nine minutes and falling behind, 13-2 when a jumper by sophomore forward Chloe Morse at the 11:16 mark gave the Lady Rams their first score of the game. The team was able to get things going later in the half, scoring 10 points in the final ten minutes of the game, including four second chance points against the much taller Liberty team. The Lady Rams headed into the locker room trailing the Flames 30-12.

Cummings Leads Eagles to Season-Opening Victory
BALTIMORE -- Junior Shante Cummings scored a career-high 24 points and Coppin State opened the 2009-10 season with a 75-57 victory over West Virginia State on the first day of the Coppin State Classic on Friday in the Coppin Center.
The Eagles overcame a two-point halftime deficit by shooting 63.3 percent from the floor in the second half and outscored the Yellow Jackets 51-31.
Cummings led the way as she scored 18 of her 24 points in the second half and finished the game 9-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. She also added seven rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Alixandria Barnette led West Virginia State with 23 points, while Sharena Atkinson added seven points and nine rebounds.
