NSU Snaps 13-Match Skid With Win Over Alabama State

Norfolk State freshman Charlotte Armstead had a match-high 12 kills and added four service aces to help the NSU volleyball team end a 13-match losing streak with a 3-0 win over Alabama State on Wednesday evening at Echols Hall. NSU won the match 25-21, 25-15, 25-9.

NSU (3-15) outplayed ASU (5-14) in every aspect of the game. The Spartans had 43 kills, 41 assists, 11 aces and 44 digs, while the Hornets tallied 18 kills, 18 assists, two aces and 28 digs.

The teams kept things close in the first set, but NSU held ASU off for the win and then dominated the last two sets to take the match. The Hornets began to unravel in the third set, enabling the Spartans to take a 19-4 lead to start the set.

Kelsye Hall and Jessica Holt each had five kills for ASU. Anna Meinert had 17 assists and Roselande Corneille had 12 digs.

For NSU, Nicole Kessner had a double-double of 33 assists and 11 digs. Tracey Copley matched her career-high with 12 digs and delivered a career-best six aces and Solange Honore added 10 digs.

The Spartans open MEAC play on Friday when they host North Carolina A&T at 6 p.m. in Gill Gym. The game has been designated Breast Cancer Awareness Night and fans are encouraged to participate in a "Pink Out" by wearing pink in support of Breast Cancer awareness.
