CSU Snaps Losing Streak With Win Over N.C. Central

Sophomore Ashley Saunders had 20 kills and Jazmin Brown recorded 24 digs, and Coppin State overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat North Carolina Central 19-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-12 on Tuesday in McDougald-McLendon Hall.

It marked the first victory of the season for Coppin State and also snapped a 61-match losing streak that dated back to the 2007 season. The Eagles last victory came on Sept. 15, 2007 in a 3-0 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.).

The win also was the first for Romonzo Beans as the Eagles head coach after taking over the program last season.

Saunders' 20 kills tied for the eighth-best total in Coppin State history, while Brown's 24 digs tied her for sixth place all-time.

Freshman Tricia Baczek had 27 assists, while Mercedes Maynard-Randall added 13. Junior Jade Dudley had 15 digs and Salena Weekly recorded five blocks.

After dropping the first two sets, Coppin State fell behind by a 4-1 score in the third set. Dudley recorded back-to-back kills to tie the match at 5-5, and the Eagles took a 6-5 lead on a North Carolina Central attack error.

The rest of the set was tightly contested as neither team held more than a two-point lead.

Tied at 23-23, Coppin State took a 24-23 lead on a North Carolina Central hitting error and captured the set on a kill by Dudley.

Coppin State (1-19) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the fourth set behind a service ace by Stephanie Johnson and a kill by Saunders.

A pair of kills by Saunders upped the Coppin State lead to 6-4 before North Carolina Central rallied to take a 10-8 lead.

NCCU held a 16-13 lead when Dudley and Weekly sparked a 3-0 run with kills to tie the match at 16-16.

The Eagles took the lead for good at 19-18 on a North Carolina Central ball handling error. Two NCCU hitting errors and a kill by Weekly increased the Eagle lead to 22-18.

North Carolina Central climbed to within 23-22, but Coppin State captured the set on kills by Saunders and Baczek.

Two kills by Saunders and another by Yolanda Reid gave Coppin State a 14-10 lead in the fifth, and deciding, set.

The Eagles claimed the set, and the match, on a North Carolina Central service error.

Coppin State opens MEAC play on Friday (Oct. 9) against Howard at 7 p.m. in the Coppin Center.
