Winston-Salem State (3-20) demonstrated a lot of heart in a 3-1 victory over the Alabama State Hornets (5-13), Tuesday evening.
The match was a hard-fought affair with two of the four sets being decided by less than five points. The Lady Rams took control of the match early with a pair of wins, 25-21 and 25-19, in the first two sets. However, the team faltered in a 15-25 loss to the Hornets, and held on for a 25-21 win to seal the match victory. As a team, the Lady Rams racked up 46 kills in the match. However, the Hornets proved to be a match for the team with 35 kills of their own.
WSSU junior Erica Cole served five straight points to key the first set win for the Lady Rams. The run included a Cole service ace as well as a pair of kills from senior hitter Annika Barnwell and fellow junior Ashley Harris. The tandem of Barnwell and Harris continued their play in the second set with four kills each to lead the Lady Rams to the win. The fourth and final set saw the Lady Rams build a 22-13 lead before Alabama State battled back, cutting the WSSU lead down to just two points, 23-21, but a Hornet attack error followed by a Barnwell kill sealed the Lady Rams' victory.
The trio of WSSU senior hitter Annika Barnwell, junior hitter Ashley Harris, and senior blocker Georgette Allen powered the Lady Rams' attack. Barnwell totaled 17 kills in the match with four service aces and five digs. Harris added 13 kills with eight digs while Allen added 10 kills and a solo block.
The Lady Rams will look to the magic of home court once again when the team hosts the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats in a Friday match at the C.E. Gaines Center.
