Morgan State Drops MEAC Opener to UMES, 3-0

Christine Edwards recorded a match-high 10 kills, Samantha Chukwura tallied seven kills and Thonya Joseph and Whitney Johnson each added six to lead the visiting Lady Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to a 3-0 sweep of Morgan State in the MEAC opener for both teams on Tuesday night at Hill Field House.

The loss was the fifth straight for Morgan State against UMES, which now trails the Lady Bears 32-11 in the all-time series. The loss also marked the 13th time this season that Morgan State has been shutout, including its last 10 consecutive losses all by way of shutouts.

Morgan State (5-15, 0-1 MEAC), which is now on a five-match losing skid, was led by Ivanti Bush's nine kills and Erin Cox, who added eight kills. Cheryl Savoy led the Lady Bears with a match-high 11 digs and Rhyan Shy added 10 digs. Christa Rogers and Jourdan Lemons shared the duties at setter, with Rogers totaling 12 assists and Lemons adding nine.

The two-time defending MEAC North Division champion Lady Hawks (12-6, 1-0 MEAC), finished the match with 39 kills and a hitting percentage of .322, including an impressive 15 kills on 25 attempts and just two errors for a hitting percentage of .520 during the second set. Morgan State totaled 23 kills and a .084 hitting percentage for the match. The Lady Hawks' Bella Jade Romero recorded 28 of the teams 35 assists and Caylin Woodward had a team-high 10 digs.

Despite committing seven service aces, UMES also tallied a match-high

11 service aces with Johnson collecting a match-high six aces and Jade recording three aces. The host Lady Bears finished with six service errors, while Cox recorded the team's lone ace.

Morgan State will return to the court on Sunday, Oct. 11 for its Homecoming match, when it plays host to Howard at 5:30 p.m. at Hill Field House.
