Lady Rams Take Three-Set Loss to Florida A&M

It was a bittersweet night for the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-28) who honored their seniors in a pre-game ceremony. The team sent the two seniors out on a high note, fighting hard for all three sets of the loss to the defending MEAC champion Rattlers (10-8). The Lady Rams gave the Rattlers all they could handle, falling 12-25, 13-25, and 12-25.

The Lady Rams found kills hard to come by against the tough Florida A&M defense that racked up 34 digs in the match and held WSSU to just 15 kills on 65 attacks. The Lady Rams also had their struggles receiving serves with 11 receiving errors in the loss.

After falling into an early 2-7 deficit in the opening set, the Lady Rams fought their way back, cutting the FAMU lead down to four points, 10-14. However, an 11-2 FAMU run would end the WSSU threat. After ending the second set on a down note, the team came out fighting in the second set, pulling within one point of the Rattlers, 8-9.

The Lady Rams were never get any closer as FAMU went on to outscore the Lady Rams 16-4 to close out the set. The final set saw the Lady Rams come out aggressively and taking an early 4-1 lead over the Rattlers. However, the team was not able to hold on to their lead as FAMU retook control of the match with a 10-3 run that left WSSU trailing 11-7. the Lady Rams would manage just five more points in the set to end the night with the three-set loss.

WSSU senior Annika Barnwell made senior night one to remember as she became the Winston-Salem State University career leader in kills with a career total of 948 kills. She tied junior Erica Cole to lead the team with five kills each in the match. Fellow senior Georgette Allen made her mark with two kills, solo block, and a block assist. Junior Lakeisha Hawes added a team-high six digs as well.  

The Lady Rams will close out home court on Sunday with a 3:00 p.m. match against the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs at the C.E. Gaines Center.
