Hampton's men's and women's cross country teams each finished second on Saturday in the inaugural Robert Shumake HBCU Cross Country Classic, held in conjunction with the National Scholastic Sports Foundation at WakeMed Soccer Park.
The Pirates finished with 72 points, while the Lady Pirates wound up with 43. Norfolk State swept both team titles.
Jasmin Branch paced the Lady Pirates with a 19:17, finishing third on the 5K course. Kenya Jones ran a 19:44 to come in sixth, while Jahlisa Smith finished eighth with a 20:05 and Janean Morris came in ninth after running a 20:21. Freshman Tyreka Arrington ran a 21:24 to come in 17th, while Adrienne Thomas finished 25th after running a 22:14.
Leah Richmond ran a 23:55 to finish 44th.
David Kimani gave the Pirates their best individual finish of the season, coming in sixth after completing the 8K course in 26:37. Freshman Barien White ran a 26:38 to finish eighth, while Xavier Fraction finished 16th after running a 27:59. Bradley Brown ran a 28:34 to come in 23rd, and Bryan Brown finished 35th with a 31:20.
Norfolk State's Kimutai Philemon won the men's individual title after running a 24:46. Aurora Scott, also from Norfolk State, took the women's individual title with a time of 18:27.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they will head to Princess Anne, Md. for the third time this season to run in the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawk Challenge.
