Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's cross country teams both left the Delaware State Invitational on Friday with wins under their belts.
The women's squad, led by first place winner Tamica Thomas,swept the first four spots in their race and won the race with 21 points.
Delaware State came in second with 53 points while Coppin State took third with 85. Lincoln (Pa.) and Morgan State placed fourth and fifth with 105 and 109 points, respectively.
Thomas, a junior, ran a 19:27.47 in the five-kilometer race.
Teammates Celia Whyte,Eunice Jones and Cynthia Anais finished immediately behind Thomas for second through fourth places with respective times of 19:27.78, 19:28.47 and 19:39.28.
Sophomore Jessica Abrantes came in 11th place with a time of 21:34.94 while freshman Emilie Ducados finished in 22:03.31, which was good for 16th place.
Freshman Melina Gallas, running in her first collegiate cross country race, placed 22nd overall with a time of 22:59.09. Fellow freshmen Jennell Wade and Kenesha Abrams placed 25th and 26th with respective times of 23:24.88 and 23:32.59.
The men's runners came in first place with a total of 49 points in their five-kilometer race. Morgan State and Delaware State were close behind with 51 and 56 points. Coppin State came in fourth with 89 points while Lincoln-Pennsylvania had 95 points for fifth place.
Juniors Amon Kiprotich and Peter Sang placed third and fourth overall with times of 15:53.79 and 16:00.03. Sophomore Shadrack Maritim ran 16:07.32, which was good for sixth place. Senior Solomon Kirongo placed 11th with a time of 16:59.16.
The next UMES finisher was Johan Welter in 25th place in 19:36.38. Sophomore
Jermol Dix ran a 20:34.53, which was good for 29th place.
Freshman Terrance Burns, senior James Moore, sophomore Damian Miles and junior Paul Jones-Burden placed 34th through 37th with respective times of 24:30.45, 24:53.44, 25:37.19 and 25:37.47.
Both the men's and women's teams have off next weekend and will next travel to Newark, Del. For the Delaware Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 17 before hosting the MEAC Championships on Halloween.
