Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-25) couldn't seem to get out of their own way in a tough three-set loss to the Elon Phoenix (18-4), Tuesday evening. As a team, the Lady Rams managed just 23 kills, but committed 20 hitting errors in the three-set loss.
The Lady Rams had a tough start to the match, falling 9-25 and 7-25 in the first two sets. However, the Lady Rams battled back for a strong third set effort, but was unable to pull out the win with the 22-25 loss. Making matters worse for the Lady Rams was an efficient Elon team that recorded 45 kills with just 11 hitting errors.
The Lady Rams ran into some early struggles, falling to a 2-12 deficit. The team would never recover as four kills and five Elon attack errors were all that the Lady Rams could manage in the remainder of the set. Though the Lady Rams got off to a better start in the second set, fighting their way to a 3-3 tie, the Lady Rams allowed a 17-1 run that put the team behind, 4-20. After an Erica Cole kill, the Lady Rams ended the set with the 7-25 loss. The final set was a much more exciting affair as the team battled to within one point of the Phoenix, 21-22, but the team couldn't pull out the set win.
WSSU senior hitter Annika Barnwell led the way for the Lady Rams with 11 kills in the match. Junior Ashley Harris added a team-high seven digs.
The Lady Rams won't have to long to rest as they will head to Daytona Beach, Florida to take on the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats on Friday.
