UMES Finishes Sixth At Delaware Invite

Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's cross country teams both took sixth place at Delaware State's Blue and Gold Invitational held at White Clay Creek State Park on Saturday.

The Hawks earned 201 points in the men's eight-kilometer race, which was good for sixth out of 14 teams competing.  Their average team time was 29:38.46.

George Mason placed first with 30 points and an average time of 26:00.30.

The meet host, Delaware, came in second place with 67 points.  Temple was third with 90 points while American was fourth with 119.  Fifth place went to Millersville with 190 points.

Howard came in with 205 points, which was good for seventh place while West Chester was eighth with 225.  Morgan State was next in ninth place with 227 points and tenth place went to Delaware State with 258.  Loyola Maryland placed 11th with 304 points while Coppin State had 329 points to take 12th.


Lincoln (Pa.) and District of Columbia took 13th and 14th with 361 and 362 points, respectively.

Morgan State's Justus David went first overall with a time of 25:38.33.

Junior Amon Kiprotich crossed first for UMES and 19th overall with a time of 26:50.63.  Peter Sang placed 24th with a time of 27:00.64 while sophomore Shadrack Maritim ran 27:08.17, which was good for 26th.

Senior Solomon Kirongo was the next Hawk finisher and placed 80th with a time of 29:51.25.  Sophomore Jermol Dix ran a 37:21.61, which was good for 108th place.

The Lady Hawk runners placed sixth out of 14 teams competing with 188 points and an average time of 20:52.48 in the women's five-kilometer race.

Delaware came in first place with 46 points and an average time of 19:24.79.


George Mason was second with 65 points while Towson was third with 70. Fourth place went to Millersville with 109 points and fifth went to American with 155.

Priscilla Jennings from Millersville crossed first overall with a time of 17:51.53.

Junior Eunice Jones was the top finisher for the Lady Hawks with a season-best 19:24.64.  Senior Tamica Thomas crossed 35th overall with a time of 20:25.65.  Fellow senior Celia Whyte crossed in 21:00.50, which was good for 49th.

Sophomore Cynthia Anais finished 60th with a time of 21:18.72. Freshman Emilie Ducados and sophomore Jessica Abrantes came in 84th and 86th with respective times of 22:12.87 and 22:15.04.

Freshmen Jennell Wade and Kenesha Abrams had respective times of 23:33.93 and 24:24.25, which were good for 110th and 118th places.  Fellow freshman Melina Gallas crossed 121st with a time of 24:45.83.

Both the men's and women's teams have off next weekend before hosting the MEAC Championships on Halloween.
