Winston-Salem State freshman Andrew Chebii capped a spectacular season with his third win of the season, finishing in first place at the 14th Annual Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic, Saturday morning. With a 25:22.40 in the men's 8K run, Chebii left runners from Kennesaw State, Florida Atlantic, and Miami all in his wake as he won the event by a full thirty seconds.
With the win, Chebii finished the season with a top five finish in every meet with wins at the Salem College Invitational, the 26th Annual Greensboro XC Invitational, and at the 14th Annual Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic.
As a team, the Rams placed 11th among 25 teams and were edged out of 10th place by Miami, which was one point better than the Rams. The Rams totaled 276 points in the event with a total time of 2:22.07 and an average time of 28:25.54. WSSU sophomore Aaron Barnes had the second best WSSU finish of the day, placing 29th overall and 25th among scoring runners in 27:25.90. Fellow sophomore Desmond Wiggan finished a close 42nd overall and 38th among scoring runners with a 27:50.40 in the event.
The Lady Rams had a solid day as well, finishing 20th at the 5K event with a team total of 562 points and a 1:50:36.80 total time and an average time of 22:07.36. WSSU freshman Tyrah Winfrey led the way for the Lady Rams with a 101st overall finish and a 92nd place finish among scoring runners with a 21:31.50 time. Sophomore Ashley Lawson wasn't far behind as she placed 110th overall and 100th among scoring runners. She finished the event in 21:42.80. Lady Ram freshman Manuela Rigaud had the third best WSSU finish of the event, placing 121st overall (109th among scoring runners). She finished the 5K event in 21:57.50.
The event capped the cross country season for the Rams and Lady Rams. But the runners won't have much free time as they will prepare for the upcoming indoor track & field season, which is scheduled to begin in December.
