Sophomore Ashley Saunders had six kills and junior Jade Dudley added four kills, but Howard defeated Coppin State 25-23, 25-12, 25-19 in the Eagles Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener on Friday in the Coppin Center.
The Lady Eagles, who posted their first victory of the season on Tuesday at North Carolina Central, were unable to sustain the momentum from the win.
Howard, which improved to 5-18 overall and 1-0 in the MEAC, hit .282 for the match and had 26 digs and nine service aces.
Coppin State, which fell to 1-20 overall and 0-1 in conference play, hit .127 for the match but had nine service errors and six ball handling errors.
Freshman Yolanda Reid added three kills and two blocks for Coppin State, while Salena Weekly had two kills and three blocks. Freshman Jazmin Brown led the CSU defense with seven digs, while Tricia Baczek had nine assists and Mercedes Maynard-Randall had seven assists.
Howard was led by Gazelle D'Artois who had 12 kills and six digs and posted a .632 hitting percentage. Tosin Elebute added seven kills and four digs, while Jasmine King had 33 assists, three kills, three service aces and four digs.
The Bison rallied to win the first set and controlled the second and third sets.
Howard held a 19-14 lead in the first set before Coppin State came back. A kill by Saunders and service aces by Dudley and Maynard-Randall keyed a 7-2 Coppin State run that tied the set at 21-21.
Kills by Nia Moore, Gabrielle Martin and King increased the Bison lead to 24-22. Dudley responded with a kill for the Eagles, but Martin finished the set with a kill for a 25-23 win.
The Eagles were limited to a -.105 attack percentage in the second set and the Bison cruised to a 25-12 victory.
Howard used an 8-0 run midway through the third set to pull away from the Eagles. The Bison trailed 13-11 before Taylor Johnson capped the run with a service ace giving Howard a 19-13 advantage.
The Eagles closed to within 21-18 on a kill by Kanishia Sheppard and a Howard attack error, but four kills by D'Artois closed out the set and the match.
Coppin State returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 11) when it hosts Hampton at 2 p.m. in the Coppin Center.
