Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) fell to Kent State (KSU) 77-47 in a game that was close inside the three-point arc, but controlled by the Golden Flashes from long range.
"It's a story of playing a very good team that is shooting very well," said Head Coach Fred Batchelor. "(Stutzman) had a lot of open looks and when they make so many long range shots it really affects our confidence level."
Four minutes into the game, UMES and KSU battled to an 8-8 tie. However, over the next 12 minutes, the Golden Flashes nailed eight field goals, including six three pointers, while UMES managed only four total buckets, pushing the KSU lead to 34-19.
UMES could never get any closer as KSU continued to rain three's in the second half. They finished the game making 11 three-pointers, while UMES managed only three. The 27 point difference in three-point makes explains the 30 point spread in the Lady Hawks' loss.
Inside the arch, UMES managed to play even being out rebounded only 42-40, and held their own on field goals as KSU went 14-35 from inside the arch, while UMES was 16-43.
April McBride posted her first double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Casey Morton led the offense, netting a team-high 15 points, shooting 7-of-11 from the field.
Leading the way for KSU was freshman Jena Stutzman, who scored a game-high 20 points, 18 of which came from long range. Anna Kowalska and Asheley Harkins also scored in double digits with 15 and 14 points respectively.
UMES continues on the road as the Lady Hawks prepare for their MEAC opener against Delaware State on January 6, 2009 at 6 p.m.
