The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced today the eight-team field that will compete in the 2009 MEAC Bowling Championship, March 20-22, at the Gate City Lanes in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Delaware State, Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State and Hampton qualified from the MEAC northern division, while Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T, Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman will compete from the MEAC southern division.
The Delaware State Lady Hornets (68-22, 25-5 MEAC), who are ranked fourth in the nation, captured the northern divisional title with a tiebreaker over the defending National Champion Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks (67-20, 25-5 MEAC).
Norfolk State finished atop of the southern division with a 14-10 record en route to its first-ever divisional title.
The Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats and South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs both concluded conference play with 10-14 records. The Lady Wildcats won the tiebreaker over the Lady Bulldogs to advance to the championship tournament.
Only the top eight teams in conference play are eligible to compete in the championship tournament. Howard (8-22), Coppin State (0-30) and South Carolina State (10-14) will not compete in the championship tournament.
The tournament begins Friday, March 20 with a qualifying round. After teams are seeded they will compete in a second qualifying round with Baker matches and placed in a double-elimination bracket.
Play continues on Saturday with teams competing in a best-of-seven Baker series.
The 2009 MEAC Bowling Championship will conclude on Sunday, March 22 beginning with the semifinal round and concluding with the championship final. Match times will be announced at a later date.
