Adams, Hawkins Lead Morgan Past Hampton, 77-55

Morgan State, which began its three-game homestand with an unexpected loss to North Carolina Central, bounced back in a strong way to win its last two games, including a 77-55 MEAC victory over Hampton on Monday evening at Hill Field House.

 

Morgan State (13-6, 5-2 MEAC) was led by Corin Adams, who finished with a game-high 25 points and added six assists and five steals, all game-highs. Erin Hawkins added 21 points to tie her career high and Brittany Dodson came off the bench and added 11 points, as Morgan State improved to 8-3 this season at home. The win was also the program’s 348th overall and 269th on the Division I level.

 

Hampton (6-11, 3-3 MEAC) which has lost two straight to the Lady Bears and five of the last six meetings, was led by Bernadette Fortune’s team-high 12 points and reserve Quanneisha Perry, who added 10 points.

 

Morgan State broke open a three-point game in the first half, by going on a 14-6 run, capped off by a three-pointer by Adams as the horn sounded, to close out the last six minutes and take a 38-27 halftime lead.

 

The Lady Bears then used a 16-6 run to begin the second half to extend its advantage to 21 points (54-33) after a jumper by Hawkins with 13:46 left. Morgan’s lead would grow to 24 points, its largest of the game, after a layup by Kristina Rosario made it a 67-43 game with 6:01 remaining.

 

Morgan State shot 43 percent (25-of-58) from the floor, including 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from three-point range, while Hampton finished with 15 field goals on 52 attempts for 28.8 percent, including 1-for-8 (12.5 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. The Lady Bears forced 21 Hampton turnovers, 10 by way of steals and tied a season-best with seven blocked shots with Rosario recording a career-high four blocked shots.

 

The Lady Bears will head to Princess Anne, Md. on Saturday, Jan. 31, for the first of four consecutive road games when they take on the Lady Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at the W. P. Hytche Center. Hampton will return home for the first of four straight home contests, beginning with a 4 p.m. game against rival Norfolk State.
