Martin Free Throws Lift Eagles Past Pirates

Senior Jennifer Martin hit two free throws with 10.2 seconds to play and scored a career-high 17 points leading Coppin State to a 60-59 MEAC victory over Hampton on Saturday in the Coppin Center.

Jerika Jenkins gave Hampton a 59-58 lead with a layup with 16 seconds left, which capped a 15-0 run and put the Pirates in front for only the second time all game.

After a timeout, the Eagles found Martin breaking to the basket and she was fouled by Chinyere Ukoh.

After the Martin free throws the Pirates had one more chance, but Bernadette Fortune missed a last-second attempt securing Coppin State's third-straight victory.

"I knew I had to make the free throws," Martin said. "I couldn't let my teammates down. We were struggling to score down the stretch and any time you have free throws you have to make them. Fortunately, I did."

Martin finished the game 7-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line and she also paced the Eagles with eight rebounds.

Coppin State (5-11, 4-2 MEAC) had its second-best shooting performance of the season making 46.9 percent of its attempts from the floor.

Hampton (6-10, 3-2 MEAC) was led by Jenkins who scored 17 points and Ukoh who had 15 points and seven rebounds.

The Pirates shot 40.4 percent from the floor, but committed 27 turnovers.

Coppin State also received 13 points from Shante Cummings and 11 points from Danielle Anders.
