Corin Adams scored a game-high 26 points, including a career-high five three-pointers and Erin Hawkins added 11 points to lead Morgan State to a 61-34 MEAC victory over Howard on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.
The Lady Bears improved to 12-6, 4-2 in MEAC play with the victory, thus ending its two-game losing streak, while Howard (3-14, 2-3 MEAC), who was led by Zykia Brown’s 10 points and Jalisa Pullins’ career-high eight points, had its three-game winning streak snapped.
Morgan State, which held Howard to just 13 points in the second half, used a 25-7 run to start the second period. Hawkins capped off the run with two free throws with 10:18 left in the game to extend the Lady Bears’ 28-21 halftime lead to a 54-28 advantage.
The Lady Bears would then go on a 7-4 run over the next seven minutes with Adams hitting a three-pointer with 3:16 left in the game, giving Morgan State a 61-34 cushion. Adams basket would be the final points of the game.
The game remained tight for the majority of the first half with five lead changes and a tie. The Lady Bison held a 11-10 lead with 10:21 left, before Hawkins responded with a trey to put the hosts up by two points. Morgan would extend its lead to 19-14 on a layup by Phylicia Jones at the 3:57 mark. The guests countered with a 5-0 run of their own to tie the game at 19 all on a layup by Evelyn Cousin-Peterson.
Morgan would score the next six points, including a three-pointer by Hawkins to go up 25-19. Adams then ended the half with a three-pointer of her own before the horn sounded to give Morgan a 28-21 lead at the break.
The Lady Bison finished the game shooting 14-of-46 (30.4 percent) from the field, including 3-for-13 from three-point range. The Lady Bears were 22-of-60 (36.7 percent) from the floor and connected on 8-of-21 (38.1 percent) three-point attempts.
Morgan State forced 25 Howard turnovers, 12 by way of steals with Adams collecting a game-high five steals. Howard however held a 6-2 advantage in blocked shots with Tamaya Daniels and Jasmine Lipford totaling two blocks apiece for the Lady Bison.
The Lady Bears conclude their three-game homestand on Monday, Jan. 26, when they host Hampton in a MEAC game at 5:30 p.m. Howard will visit the Lady Eagles of Coppin State on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
