Baltimore, MD?Reggie Holmes poured in 17 of his game-high 22 in the second half and Rogers Barnes added 11 of his 13 after intermission to lead Morgan State to a 78-56 win over Howard University in a MEAC men’s game at Hill Fieldhouse.
The Bears (10-9 overall, 5-1 in the MEAC) led 30-23 at the half and then put the game away with a 28-4 run at the start of the second half. Holmes and Barnes took turns scoring, combining for 18 during the run.
The Bison (3-15 overall, 1-4 in the MEAC), who suited up only eight players, could not match up with Morgan State, which used its bench liberally. And if not having senior guard Randy Hampton available due to flu symptoms, the Bison added to their woes by losing leading scorer Eugene Myatt for most of the second half with a back injury.
Morgan State shot 56 percent (20 of 36) in the second half and the times when the shots did not fall, the Bears were there to clean up as they held a 13-3 advantage on the offensive glass.
Myatt, who was coming off a 25-point effort in Monday’s win over South Carolina State, kept his team close through the first 20 minutes but when he injured his back, the Bison had problems adjusting. Myatt finished with a team-high 15 points while Kyle Riley contributed 13 and Kandi Mukole chipped in with 10 before fouling out. C.J. Prince who was averaging 13 points in the past four games, was held to one field goal and six points.
Holmes led all scorers with 22, Barnes tallied 13, Jermaine Bolden recorded 11 and nine assists and Marquise Kately and Kevin Thompson, each tallied 10.
NEXT UP: The Bison will try to rebound on Monday when they return to Baltimore to take on the Eagles of Coppin State at 7:30 pm while the Bears host Hampton University on Monday at 7:30 pm.
