Goldsberry?s Jumper Leads Eagles to Upset Win over Pirates

BALTIMORE -- Vince Goldsberry connected on a jumper with 2.8 seconds remaining in regulation leading Coppin State to a 61-60 MEAC victory over Hampton on Saturday in the Coppin Center.

Goldsberry's jumper capped a wild finish, which saw the Eagles in the right place at the right time.

Vincent Simpson, who led Hampton with 10 points, missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity with 15 seconds to play and the Pirates clinging to a 60-59 lead.

After two timeouts, the Eagles worked the ball to Mike Buckley who missed a 3-point attempt. Lenny Young rebounded the miss for the Eagles, but his lay-up attempt was blocked by Hampton’s Theo Smalling. The blocked shot went directly into the hands of Goldsberry who knocked down the game-winner from the right elbow.

It was the only attempt of the night for Goldsberry who subbed into the game with 15 seconds remaining after Tywain McKee fouled out of the contest.

Coppin State snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory and improved to 4-15 overall and 2-4 in the MEAC, while Hampton dropped to 9-9 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Michael Harper paced Coppin State with a career-high 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor. The freshman hit 6-of-10 three-point attempts and had five rebounds and two steals.

McKee added 18 points, six assists and five rebounds before fouling out. The senior is now only 19 points away from breaking the Coppin State career scoring record of 1,938 points held by Reggie Isaac.

The Eagles shot only 36.2 percent from the floor, but made 10-of-12 free throw attempts and hit nine three-point baskets.

Hampton was led by Simpson with 10 points, while Donte Harrison had nine points and Michael Freeman and Christopher Tolson each added eight points.
