MEAC ANNOUNCES MEN'S BASKETBALL WEEKLY HONORS

 

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., ? Hampton’s Vincent Simpson and Norfolk State’s Corey Lyons were named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Player’s of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.  Kevin Thompson of Morgan State was selected as the Rookie of the Week while Theo Smalling, also of Hampton, was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

Simpson (G, 6-1, 170, Jr., Philadelphia, Pa.) averaged 24 points in the last three Pirate matchups.  He recorded a career-high 34 points, shooting 11-of-19 from the field, to lead the Pirates to a 59-43 win over the South Carolina State Bulldogs.  He registered 26 points and four rebounds in Hampton’s 75-76 double-overtime loss to Florida A&M.  He also 12 points along with four steals in the Pirates win over Winston-Salem State. 

Lyons (G/F, 6-4, 185, Sr., Bronx, N.Y.) averaged 23 points, 3.7 boards and 1.3 steals in three games for the Spartans.  He shot 51-percent from the field, 63-percent from 3-point range and 94 percent (15-of-16) from the charity stripe.  He surpassed the 1,000 career point mark with the Spartans win over Maryland E. Shore, where he notched a game-high 29 points, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc. 

Thompson (F, 6-8, 235, r-Fr., Baltimore, Md.) recorded a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds, including three blocks in 28 minutes of play, in the Bears win over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats.  He recorded 23 points, 18 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots to help MSU finish 1-1 in their last two outings.

Smalling (F, 6-7, 220, Jr., Tampa, Fla.) pulled down 25 boards, blocked five shots and stole the ball twice to aid the Pirates finish with a 2-1 mark in conference play.  He grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, blocked three shots and snagged one steal in Hampton’s loss to Florida A&M. 

Other Top Performances

Jamie Boyer (UMES) scored a combined 28 points including seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in three games last week for the Hawks. 

Fred Bouie (DSU) averaged 12 points and two rebounds in three games last week for the Hornets.

Reggie Holmes (MSU) recorded a game-high 29 points, shooting 50-percent from the field including 6-of-11 from 3-point range, in the Bears win over Bethune-Cookman.

Neal Pitt (UMES) scored a career-high 27 points and nine rebounds in the Hawks loss to Norfolk
State. 

CJ Prince (HOW) registered 21 points, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, against Bethune-Cookman.

Brandon Monroe (NSU) averaged 7.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, two blocks and 1.7 steals in three games last week for the Spartans.

Frisco Sandidge (DSU) recorded 21 points against Winston-Salem State and North Carolina A&T and grabbed a total 17 rebounds to help the Hornets to two wins.

Chris Tolson (HAM) scored 13 points, shooting 50-percent from the 3-point range (4-of-8), in the Pirates win over South Carolina State.

Lamar Twitty (FAMU) shot 7-for-14 from the field with 21 points and six rebounds in the Rattlers win over Coppin State.
