Washington, DC---Eugene Myatt scored a season-high 25 points to lead Howard to 74-65 win over South Carolina State at Burr Gymnasium. The game was televised on ESPNU as part of the MEAC/TV package.
A 6-5 senior guard/forward from Philadelphia, PA, Myatt set the tone early for the Bison, scoring 13 of his points in the first half as Howard took a 45-35 lead at the half.
“Teams have been doing a good job of doubling on me,” said Myatt, who recently scored his 1,000th point. “When I get one on one, I have to make them pay. I got a lot of that tonight and was able to get us off to a good start.”
Unlike some of the early season games when Myatt was not able to get much scoring support from his teammates, this game was different. Kyle Riley and Randy Hampton, who have both played well of late, contributed nine and eight, respectively.
“Kyle is playing well, scoring and defending,” said Howard Coach Gil Jackson. “He has been our most consistent player because he is finally healthy.”
Hampton, a 6-5 senior guard/forward from Washington, DC, finished with 12 points and four rebounds, but more importantly settled the team down when the Bulldogs made runs.
“Randy is a fifth year player,” said Coach Jackson. “He’s athletic and can do a lot of things for us. He provides a comfort zone for us when we get a little unsettled.”
The Bison (3-14 overall, 1-3 in the MEAC) were able to maintain a double digit lead through most of the second half as Myatt continued to be effective. For the second straight game, reserve guard C.J. Prince was a big factor. The 6-2 junior scored nine points on three, three-point field goals to stave off potential SC State rallies.
“C.J. gives us a nice lift,” said Coach Jackson of his designated zone buster. “He is a very consistent shooter and he plays with a lot of poise.”
The Bulldogs (6-10 overall, 1-3 in the MEAC) were led by Jason Johnson’s 14, reserve Josh Jackson’s double-double of 12 points, 12 rebounds and Jimmy Williams’ 12 points.
GAME NOTES: Myatt added four assists and two steals to his stat line...the Bulldogs lost despite holding a 36-28 advantage on the boards and a 21-18 advantage off the bench.
