Coppin State Eases Past FAMU, 54-50

Florida A&M dropped their second straight MEAC game Monday night, falling to Coppin State, 54-50 in Gaither Gymnasium.

Monday's setback left FAMU 2-2 for their four-game conference homestand, dropping them to 7-8 overall and 3-2 in the MEAC.

Visiting Coppin State (4-11, 3-2) took advantage of an off night shooting by FAMU, plus 21 Lady Rattler turnovers to capture Monday's game, holding off a late charge in the second half for the win.

The Lady Eagles shot 46.4 percent in the opening half and cashed in eight of 11 charity tosses to hold a 34-27 halftime lead, aided by 15 FAMU miscues in first stanza.

FAMU shot just 23.1 percent from the floor in the opening half and it was their 14 of 18 foul shooting that kept them in contention, almost overcoming their turnovers.

The Lady Rattlers hit eight of 12 charity tosses in the final six minutes of the half as part of a 12-7 run, which trimmed a 27-15 deficit with 5:57 left to 34-27 by halftime.

FAMU outscored Coppin State, 23-20 in the second half and again, it was their 11-of-14 performance from the foul line that kept them alive, since they shot just 16.7 percent (6-of-36) from the floor.

But the Lady Eagles withstood FAMU's 19-12 run over the final 14 minutes of the game, watching their 11 -point, 42-31 edge with 13:47 left, dwindle down to the final four-point margin.

Deidra Jones led all scorers in the game with 15 points for FAMU, which got nine points and 19 rebounds from Melissa Daniels, along with nine points from Stephanie Foster and eight points from Tameka McKelton.

Coppin State was paced by Shante Cummings with 11 points, Jennifer Martin with nine points and Chanelle Downing with seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.
