Lady Bison Win Second Straight

Zykia Brown scored a game-high 13 points and Tamaya Daniels just missed a double-double with 11 and nine rebounds to lead Howard to a 63-36 win over Winston-Salem State in a non-conference women’s game at Burr Gymnasium.  The win was the second straight for the Lady Bison (2-13) while the Lady Rams (0-14) are still looking for their first win.

Howard broke the game open with a 15-3 run to start the second half.  The run was fueled by Brown, who tallied seven of her nine second half points and Evelena Cousin-Peterson, who contributed six.

The Lady Bison showed improvement over their last game by shooting a season-best 47 percent from the field, including 59 percent in the second half.

“The morale is now high on this team,” explained Niki Reid Geckeler, in her first year at the helm for the Lady Bison.  “The win in that last game carried over to tonight.”

Daniels played an important role in the win with her rebounding and defense as did freshman forward Natalie Day, who finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

“We showed more improvement on defense,” said Geckeler, who served as an assistant at Georgetown before taking the job at the Hilltop.  “We did a good job, especially getting into the passing lanes.”  Howard limited Winston-Salem State to 19 percent shooting (10 of 53) and held a 49-31 advantage on the boards.

Brown, who has emerged as one of the top players in the conference, is coming off a career-high 31-point effort against Bethune-Cookman on Monday.  The 5-8 sophomore guard had a fine all-around game with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

“She is an up-and-coming player,” said Coach Geckeler.  “You can see her confidence improving game by game.”
