Bison Ride Hot Second Half, Pick Up First Win Of The Season

Zykia Brown had a career-high 31 points and 12 rebounds and Howard shot 52% in the second half en route to a 69-58 come from behind victory over Bethune-Cookman Monday evening in Moore Gymnasium. The win snapped a 15-game losing streak for the Bison.

Howard was 12-for-23 in the second half with Brown scoring 19 of her 31 in the second period. The victory was the first career-win for Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler.

"I thought the team played really well tonight," Geckeler said. "We trailed by nine early but gave it our all in the second half."

Howard (1-13, 1-2 MEAC), who had not won since the March 3, 2008 victory over Norfolk State, got big contributions from seniors Tamaya Daniels and Lonice Kenley. Daniels scored all 11 of her points in the second stanza and Kenley chipped in eight.

Brown added four steals and three assists while shooting 50% (8-of-16) from the field. The sophomore also connected on 13-of-16 from the charity stripe.

Daniels pulled down six rebounds and freshman Natalie Day totaled 10 points and four rebounds in 21 minutes of action.

Howard trailed by nine with 3:46 left in the first half before a Brown trey spurred a 17-8 Bison run over the next 10 minutes. A Daniels layup at 14:12 gave Howard a 3-point advantage, its first lead since 13:06 in the first stanza.

Howard is off until Jan. 17 when it hosts Winston-Salem State in the NCAA Pack the House game. Game time at Burr Gymnasium is slated for 2 p.m.
