MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY MEN'S BASKETBALL HONORS

 

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., January 12, 2009 ? Morgan State’s Reggie Holmes was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.  Kevin Thompson also of Morgan State and Kyle O’Quinn of Norfolk State were selected as the Co-Rookies of the Week while Florida A&M’s Yannick Crowder was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

Holmes (G, 6-4, 185, Jr., Baltimore, Md.) scored a combined 51 points last week, while shooting 57-percent from the field, to aid the Bears to a 2-0 mark.  He recorded 25 points, connecting on 10-of-22 baskets including 5-for-11 from 3-point range to lead the Bears to their first ever-win over interstate rival Maryland.  He also grabbed eight rebounds and posted one assist and one steal in the victory.  He followed that performance with 26 points, 10-of-13 from the field, with seven rebounds against North Carolina A&T.  He continued his hot 3-point shooting edge against the Aggies, knocking down four of five attempts. 

Thompson (F, 6-8, 235, r-Fr., Baltimore, Md.) recorded his third double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds in the Bears win over Maryland.  He also added one assist, one blocked shot and one steal. In the Bears last two outings Thompson scored a combined 14 points and 18 rebounds.

O’Quinn (F, 6-9, 225, Fr., Jamaica, N.Y.) notched his first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in the Spartans 87-77 win over Coppin State.  He finished 3-of-4 from the charity stripe and blocked three shots to help NSU pick up its third win of the season.

Crowder (F, 6-8, 215, Fr., Stone Mountain, Ga.) pulled down 11 of his 14 rebounds in the second half as the Rattlers came from behind to beat the Howard Bison, 79-74 in overtime. He also blocked one shot and stole one pass in the win.  Earlier in the week Crowder recorded five boards and blocked one basket in FAMU’s defeat to Nebraska. 

Other Top Performances

Joe Ballard (FAMU) scored a career-high 28 points in the Rattlers 79-74 overtime win over Howard.

David Buchannon (FAMU) scored a career-high 17 points, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, in the Rattlers overtime victory.

Jamie Boyer (UMES) shot 50-percent from the field (5-of-10) and from the 3-point arc (4-of-8) en route to 14 points in the Hawks victory over the Rams.

Thomas Coleman (NCAT) blocked a game-high six shots, and shot perfectly from the field (3-of-3) in the Aggies 84-47 win over Tennessee Wesleyan.

Michael Deloach (NSU) scored 24 points, shooting 67-percent from the field, with a game-high seven assists in the Spartans win over Coppin State.

Jason Johnson (SCSU) recorded 14 points and seven rebounds, connecting on 64-percent from the field, in the Bulldogs 69-52 win over Delaware State.

Keishawn Mayes (UMES) tallied 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists in the Hawks 69-66 win over the Rams.

Brandon Monroe (NSU) finished with 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks, and was perfect from the field (4-of-4) in the Spartans win over the Eagles.

Neal Pitt (UMES) posted his third double-double of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds in the Hawks 69-66 win over Winston-Salem State.

 

 

 

Jimmy Williams (SCSU) hit 5-of-6 from 3-point range and finished with 15 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals in the Bulldogs’ win.
