Lady Wildcats Downed by Hampton Lady Pirates

In a game that saw few lead changes, but remained close throughout, the Lady Pirates of Hampton defeated the Lady Wildcats Saturday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium.

Although Bethune-Cookman led throughout most of the game, carrying a five-point lead into the final minutes, the Lady Wildcats succumbed to a Lady Pirate surge that gave them the lead and sparked a run that led to a 59-67 loss for B-CU.

The game got off to a slow start with more than a twenty-minute game delay on 2:14 into the game due to an on-court injury to B-CU starting forward, junior Euneshia Proctor, who was taken from the arena and did not return. As the game resumed, the Lady Wildcats played much of the game on a mission, facing a two-point deficit at the time of the stoppage.

B-CU quickly gained control of the game, causing a tie at nine with 14:54 remaining in the half. From there, the Lady Wildcats went on a 16-7 run to push out to a nine-point lead. However, the Lady Pirates did not lay down and fought back into the game, narrowing the gap to two points, heading into the half with B-CU leading 36-34.

Following the half, B-CU got back on track and gained an eight-point advantage over Hampton, keeping on top through most of the second half. As the game progressed, B-CU's post depth caught up with them, missing a major component on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor, and allowed Hampton to get second-chance looks and creep back in to take a one-point lead with 5:15 remaining in the game. Hampton scored 13 second-chance points in the second half, while B-CU only had one. Hampton proceeded to make a 10-3 run to gain the upper hand in the game and close out the game defeating B-CU 67-59 as the final buzzer sounded.

Although Bethune-Cookman took care of the ball well in the first half, allowing scores off turnovers made a huge impact in the second half. In the first half B-CU led 10-5 in points off turnovers. However, it was a completely different story in the next half, with B-CU surrendering 17 points off turnovers while only scoring five of their own.

Leading the Lady Wildcats in scoring was Jasmine Daniels, who put in 17 points for the game. Just behind was Demetria Frank, scoring 14 and snagging three steals. Leading all rebounders and scoring double-figures was Sarah Bolden, who grabbed eight rebounds and contributed 10 points in addition to two steals and two blocks.

The loss moves Bethune-Cookman to 6-6 on the season and 0-2 in MEAC play. Up next for the Lady Wildcats is MEAC foe Howard, who travels to face B-CU at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 12 at Moore Gymnasium.
