The Norfolk State volleyball team wrapped up its weekend at the Comfort Suites 49er Tournament with a 3-0 non-conference loss to MEAC member Howard at Halton Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Bison (1-6) won the match 25-22, 25-19, 25-23.
NSU (1-6) scored first in each of the three sets, but were unable to close the deal in each. In the first set, the Spartans jumped out to a 4-0 lead on four straight kills. Howard got on the board on a service error by Nicole Kessner. The two teams traded points back and forth and a kill by Elayne Greer tied it at 15-all.
But the Bison limited the Spartans to just seven more points the rest of the way.
It was much of the same in the two final sets with NSU taking the early lead and Howard rallying for the win.
Despite the outcome of the match, the Spartans outplayed the Bison in several aspects of the match. NSU had more kills (47 to 28), digs (57 to 46), and assists (39 to 26) than Howard.
Breanna Allums and Yolanda Roberts each had 11 kills, while Kessner had 35 assists for NSU.
Gazelle D'Artois had nine kills, four digs and 2.5 blocks for Howard.
Allums was named to the all-tournament team after totaling 24 kills, 25 digs, five assists and four total blocks (one solo) in nine sets for the weekend.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they travel to cross-town rival Hampton for a non-conference matchup. The match begins at 6 p.m.
