Rams Have Strong Showing at UNC-Pembroke Invite

It didn’t take long for Winston-Salem State freshman Desmond Wiggan to make his mark as he placed third in his first collegiate event, the UNC-Pembroke Invitational Friday afternoon. Wiggan led the Rams to a third place team finish in the event despite battling through rainy conditions.

Wiggan was 43 seconds off of the winning pace, posting a time of 21:45.67 in the event. Fellow freshman Elijah Strickland had the next best time for Rams in the event. He placed 22nd in the event, posting a time of 24:47.75 in the event. Not far behind was WSSU sophomore Cornell Jones, who finished 24th in a time of 25:05.50.

"The team was awesome", WSSU head coach Halcyon Blake said following the event. "It was raining so hard that you couldn't even see the runners, but no one complained and they ran as a team."

The Rams will get back into action next weekend when the team takes part in the Adidas Raleigh Invitational.
