Norfolk State freshmen Breanna Allums and Elayne Greer each had match-highs of nine kills and hit .467 as the Norfolk State volleyball team routed Virginia State 3-0 on Tuesday night at Echols Hall. The Spartans dominated the Trojans in every aspect of the contest, winning 25-7, 25-9, 25-13.
The Spartans (1-3) gave the crowd of 107 fans a lot to cheer about as they recorded 37 kills to VSU’s 11 and tallied 13 service aces. As a team, NSU hit a season-high .435 for the match and had a single-set hitting percentage of .636 in the first set. The Trojans (1-4) hit -.090 for the match.
NSU jumped out to quick double-digit leads in the first two sets. VSU tried to rally in the third set, but the Spartans had too large of a lead for the Trojans to overcome.
For VSU, Reneisha Hill had nine assists and Brooke Wilson had eight digs. Four different Trojans recorded two kills.
Senior Yolanda Roberts had seven kills and a match-high five aces. Freshman Nicole Kessner led all players with 21 assists, while newcomer Jourdan Ellison had a match-high 13 digs. The Spartans only committed seven errors and had seven players hit .400 or better.
NSU travels to Charlotte, N.C. this weekend to play in the Comfort Suites 49ers Tournament hosted by UNC-Charlotte. The Spartans play Youngstown State at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and then take on host Charlotte (12:30 p.m.) and Howard (4:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
