Lady Rams Fall To UMES In WSSU Volleyball Invite, 3-0

Winston-Salem State came up just short on Saturday afternoon in Winston-Salem, N.C. as they fell in defeat to the Lady Hawks of the Maryland Eastern Shore by the score of 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-7) in the 2008 Lady Rams’ Volleyball Invitational championship match from the C.E. Gaines Center.

 

The Lady Rams narrowly fell in defeat in the first game of the match 25-20 as WSSU committed only one attack error in the game.

 

Maryland Eastern Shore, a team that would post a perfect 5-0 record in the tournament, responded in the second and third games as they cruised to 25-10 and 25-7 victories en route to the top spot in the tournament.

 

Led by tournament Most Outstanding Player Christine Edwards and her 11 kills, the Lady Hawks committed only six attack errors in the match in contrast to their 41 kills as UMES recorded a .438 attack percentage en route to the tournament championship.

 

WSSU was led by Ashley Harris and Annika Barnwell who each recorded five kills in the loss.  Alexandria Brown led WSSU with four assists in a losing effort.

 

The loss drops WSSU to 4-11 on the season while UMES improves to 12-6 overall with the win.
